This course in­tro­duces stu­dents to core con­cepts in the graphic com­mu­ni­ca­tions field in­clud­ing ty­pog­ra­phy, color the­ory, de­sign and pro­duc­tion ter­mi­nol­ogy, re­pro­duc­tion processes, file for­mats and sub­strates. Dur­ing the se­mes­ter, stu­dents will com­plete three pages of their own ePort­fo­lio web site. Lec­tures will pro­vide stu­dents with a his­tor­i­cal per­spec­tive of the graphic com­mu­ni­ca­tions field as well as dis­cussing cur­rent prac­tices and fu­ture trends.

Course De­scrip­tion: Pro­duc­tion for De­sign­ers fo­cuses on cur­rent print and pro­duc­tion pro­ce­dures that can pre­pare de­sign­ers and cre­ative thinkers for real-world sit­u­a­tions. Un­der­stand­ing print (off­set and dig­i­tal), and the process of pro­duc­tion is an es­sen­tial part of the de­sign process that can as­sure a pre­dictable out­come of de­liv­er­ables. Em­pha­sis is on the im­por­tance of pro­ject plan­ning and man­age­ment, per­sonal com­mu­ni­ca­tion skills to bet­ter in­ter­face with col­leagues and to un­der­stand the three key com­po­nents of mod­ern print pro­duc­tion. Top­ics in­clude print media spec­i­fi­ca­tions, dig­i­tal and off­set pre­press, page im­po­si­tion, proof­ing, Paper and sub­strates, spe­cialty print­ing, bud­get man­age­ment, un­der­stand­ing of color man­age­ment, and prepa­ra­tion of files. Ap­plied dis­cus­sion of re­verse en­gi­neer­ing, work­flow, and pro­ject plan­ning are crit­i­cal to this course. This course will also ex­plain the re­la­tion­ship be­tween the world of Ad­ver­tis­ing, mar­ket­ing and re­lated dig­i­tal and ana­log pro­duc­tion tech­niques, Strate­gic use of In­ter­net search en­gines, web­sites, and lever­ag­ing tools of tech­nol­ogy is demon­strated to sup­port stu­dent ef­forts.
