My Courses
Attention Freshmen Writers: Armed with simply a pen and paper, we solve life’s complicated problems by breaking them down into simple steps. âIn life there are no easy answers â or, are there?,” says our Mission Statement. “Large problems are actually workable when you break them down into simple steps. In this Learning Community (which combines English and Math), students will translate their own innate abilities into actionable tools for written communication and mathematical problem solving.â ABOUT US: We are a First Year Learning Community at CityTech (NYCCT) that unites two professors, myself (Sarah Schmerler, English Dept.) and Grazyna Niezgoda, Mathematics. I teach ENG 1101, and Prof. Niezgoda teaches Math 065. We share the same students in both our classes in an effort to build unity and communication. It’s been proven that Freshmen have better skill retention and stay with the college experience when we, the faculty, combine our forces and work together.
Persuasion is key to getting ahead in this world; but how can you make yourself heard if you canât put your words out there in an honest, clear, and very impressive fashion? We have the answers: Hard work (what did you think?!), plus good new ways to re-frame your relationship to pen and paper, time management, and essays, essays, essays. Youâll like assignments when weâre done with this semester.
In this course, students will learn concepts and applied theories of digital media and the two fundamental graphic forms: raster and vector digital images and will define and describe similar and contrasting factors in each kind of image. The comparison will also recommend the best practice, specification or standard for using a specific form in a specific application. The course will include basic digital imaging terminology, and techniques including size, resolution, color space and file elements, measurements and file formats. Students are introduced to digital imaging concepts through software such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator on the Macintosh operating system. Scanning and digital photography are integrated into lesson plans.
This is an advanced course in communication skills, including the expository essay and the research essay. This course further develops studentsâ reading and writing skills through literary and expository readings.
