MAT 1372 Statistics with Probability, Spring 2014
Topics covered in this course include sample spaces and probabilities, discrete probability distributions (Binomial, Hypergeometric, Poisson), expectation and variance, continuous probability distributions (Normal, Chi- Square), confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, and correlation and regression. Spreadsheets are used throughout the semester. This course, (3 credits, 2 class hrs, 2 lab hrs), satisfies Pathways: Scientific World. Course prerequisite: MAT 1375; Not open to students who have completed MAT 2572.
MAT1372 Statistics with Probability
A 3 credit but 4 hour introductory course. Topics include sample space, expectation and variance, binomial, Poisson, normal, student and chi-square distributions, confidence interval, hypothesis testing, correlation and regression. Students do a group project comparing 2 numeric variables and present at the end of the semester. The extra classroom hour is designed to facilitate a hands-on feel to the course including a heavy use of MS Excel.
Written language forms the foundation of human society: it allows us to communicate with our neighbors and with societies across the globe. It enables the sharing of scientific discoveries and it affords us an imaginative and creative outlet. It ranges from the lofty incantations of Shakespeare to the abbreviated language of text messages. This course will give you the opportunity to experience different kinds of academic writing, and to engage with those texts through your own written responses. Together, we will work to discover your strengths as a writer, and we’ll devise strategies to help you identify and address your weaknesses. You’ll be expected to perform a large amount of both reading and writing, with the goal of preparing you to continue your academic career at the college level. This course introduces you to academic inquiry, responsible scholarship, collegiate research techniques, formal academic writing, and the importance of drafting and revising. As you can see in the department’s list of competencies for this class, you are expected to submit writing that is effectively organized, rhetorically sophisticated, proofread, revised, grammatically correct, varied at the sentence level, and that uses a vocabulary and language (literal or figurative) that is appropriate to the imagined audience. You are also expected to read challenging texts, identify the main ideas and how they are supported, use resources like a dictionary when necessary, make inferences and summarize. Please refer to the competencies handout for a full explanation of these goals, since they are key to our class and to each of our assignments.

BioMedical Informatics Student Club
The Biomedical Informatics (BIB) Student club exists to advocate, provide support and services to fellow Biomedical Informatics undergraduate students here at New York City College of Technology. We aim to assist students in gaining opportunities and discovering information that is relevant and beneficial towards the degree requirement of the program. Through the expansion of knowledge, workshops, field trips and invited speakers, we hope to give students the option to network and attain skills required for classes including the internship. This is a student-run club which is advised by faculty members, Professor Eugenia Giannopoulou and Professor Mai Zahran.
Minority Association of Pre-Medical & Pre-Health Students (M.A.P.S.) Club
What is MAPS? -The Minority Association of Pre-Health Students that provides a network of pre-med and pre-health students and chapters nationwide. What is the purpose of MAPS? -To provide underrepresented pre-mhealth students with knowledge, skills, and experience that are both prerequisite and concomitant to professional participation in health care fields. -To improve minority matriculation into all professional health related programs, with an emphasis on medicine. -To foster support and serve as a resource for current and future students interested in health care.
