This course is designed to prepare the student for entry into the professional world of illustration. Development of a portfolio demonstrating a high level of skill and a personal style, as well as the ability to discuss the work in formal and conceptual terms is the primary focus. Additionally, the student will be introduced to a variety of professional practices and develop a familiarity with the local, regional and national scenes. The portfolio contents should demonstrate the student’s versatility and advanced skills while demonstrating consistency in presentation. This course is broken into 4 course goals: Portfolio Development , Professional Skills , Business Practices , Authorship

COMD1340 Photo1, Spring 2019

This course will serve as an introduction to the fundamentals of photography for students in Communication Design. Our curriculum will be based on operating digital SLRs and compact digital cameras, with an emphasis on composition and technical knowledge. In conjunction with digital capture we will examine and utilize file management, fundamental digital darkroom technique, and direct, archival printing. The course will involve studio and location shooting during classroom laboratory sessions. Studio projects will include still and portrait exercises. On location shoots will be designed to put fundamental camera techniques into practice.

ENG1121, E115, Spring 2016

In ENG1121, we will explore four writing tasks – summary, critical reading/critique, synthesis, and research. Our semester will be divided into six units of focused study: • unit 1: annotation, MLA citation, best practices • unit 2: academic essays • unit 3: literary fiction • unit 4: periodical publications • unit 5: research project • unit 6: final portfolio Units 2 through 4 will require preparation of short response papers that reflect an understanding of one or more of our writing tasks. Unit 5 will culminate in a research paper that links something from the past with something from the present, and unit 6 will result in the creation of a final portfolio containing revisions and evidence of self-reflection.
