ARCH3631, Ad­vanced Ma­te­ri­als Work­shop, F2017

Build­ing de­sign and con­struc­tion must an­tic­i­pate an in­flux of smart ma­te­ri­als which re­spond more acutely to en­vi­ron­men­tal con­di­tions and lim­i­ta­tions. This course syn­the­sizes re­search in ma­te­ri­als sci­ence with the lat­est tech­nolo­gies for tool­ing and mea­sur­ing per­for­mance within the built en­vi­ron­ment. Ma­te­ri­als to be re­searched and de­vel­oped may in­clude glass, ce­ram­ics, plas­tics and poly­mers, nat­ural fibers and metal al­loys. Stu­dents re­search ma­te­ri­als with a par­tic­u­lar focus on se­lec­tion, sourc­ing, pro­cess­ing and as­sem­blage.

A his­tor­i­cal analy­sis of the city’s in­fra­struc­ture, real es­tate de­vel­op­ment, mu­nic­i­pal plan­ning and or­di­nances and key build­ing using the com­par­a­tive method. The de­vel­op­ment of a mega­lopo­lis. Trac­ing the course of Ar­chi­tec­tural His­tory from the vil­lage to the pre­sent role of the city as the com­mer­cial and cul­tural hub of the na­tion. This course will stress the dy­namic so­cio-eco­nomic de­ter­mi­nants emerg­ing as a re­sult of im­prove­ments and growth in tech­nol­ogy, trans­porta­tion, in­fra­struc­ture, real es­tate, com­merce, hous­ing and recre­ation.

LIB 1201: Re­search and Doc­u­men­ta­tion for the In­for­ma­tion Age Fall 2011

In this course we will ex­plore is­sues in re­search and doc­u­men­ta­tion for text (in print and on­line), im­ages, sound, and mul­ti­me­dia. You will in­ves­ti­gate where in­for­ma­tion comes from and how it is or­ga­nized in both tra­di­tional and emerg­ing media. We will ex­am­ine the ethics of in­for­ma­tion use and de­ter­mine how to crit­i­cally eval­u­ate sources. Through­out the course, you will cre­ate and pre­sent re­search and doc­u­men­ta­tion pro­jects using tra­di­tional and emerg­ing media and tech­nolo­gies. This is a writ­ing-in­ten­sive course. You should ex­pect to spend 4-6 hours out­side of class time prepar­ing for class each week.
