Prof Cheng’s ARTH1100 History of Photography Fall 2019

“Great photography is always on the edge of failure.” — Garry Winogrand An introduction to photography as a fine art and communications medium, from the publication of its invention in 1839 to the present, among Western practitioners. Illustrated lectures and discussions appraise diverse overlapping functions of photographs and view camera work within the history of art and culture. Changing styles, purposes and techniques are outlined chronologically. Additional Description for this section: We will examine the use of photography for aesthetic, documentary, and “scientific” purposes, stylistic shifts in photography related to aesthetic concerns, and varying interpretations of subject matter based on social and cultural concerns at specific moments in history. We will also consider the relationship between photography and the visual arts in general, which culminates with the primacy of photography as a medium by the late twentieth century.

ENG 2001 Introduction to Fiction, Fall 2019

In this course, we will study fiction across genres, eras, and locales. We will examine broad themes such as moving, marriage, home, the individual, and the conflicts surrounding globalization. Specifically, we will examine the fascinating and yet confusing concept of globalization, especially its relation to literature. The central questions that we will ask in this class are: what does globalization feel like?, and, what does it feel like to be transnational? The short fiction that we will read will help us answer this question, for literature is very good at revealing and performing feelings.

Special uses of plastics and metals in the fabrication of stage scenery and scenery elements. The major emphasis will be placed on the forming and shaping of various plastics, molds and casting, problems of safety and toxicity and the selection and use of metals.

An in depth analysis of the planning, budgeting and construction processes used in the production of scenery. Students will apply their knowledge of construction and drafting techniques and process to generate shop drawings, develop budget estimates and plan construction schedules.

ENT2210 Advanced Scenery Construction Fall 2017

This course aims to take a student from competency to proficiency in the scene shop. A successful student will be able to take a scenery project from the drawing to completion, either alone or leading a small crew. Skills covered include: construction techniques, project planning, tool and procedure selection, joinery, time and cost estimation and carpentry. Coursework will focus heavily on lab and project work.
