PROMPT: OUTLINE AN ACTIVITY YOU WOULD USE IN YOUR CLASSROOM THAT IS ALIGNED TO A LEARNING STANDARD; USING THE ACTIVITY AS A STARTING POINT, DETERMINE THE TECHNOLOGY THAT CAN BE USED TO CONDUCT THE ACTIVITY
Standards:
- NGLS. 9-10SL5: Make strategic use of digital media and/or visual displays in presentations to enhance understanding of findings, reasoning, and evidence, and to add elements of interest to engage the audience
- Given a scenario, install and configure motherboards, CPUs, and add-on cards. Explain the purposes and uses of various peripheral types. 3.4 3.5
Activity: In groups students will be assigned a PC component such as CPU, motherboard, graphics card, sound card etc. Student will create a how-to video on how to properly install and configure the component they are assigned. They also need to address the purpose and use of their component. I will provide various amount to platforms they can use to the create the video. If any student doesn’t feel comfortable being on camera, they can Google Slides and pictures they took on the phones to create a how-to presentation.
SAMR Technology: Students will collaborate on Google Slide to work on the presentation. They will have to ability to work offline as “Rolling out from late April 2019, there’s a new way to access Google Slides when you’re offline or have poor internet connection” (Morris, 2020). I also will allow the student to add images and videos into to the slide. Google has also recently allowed it users add audio to Google Slides. Last, the reasons a lot teachers love Google Slides, is the ability to comment on students work to help students finalize their presentations. Student also have the option of 18 free video editing software to create their videos. For example, “Clipchamp Create is one of the most generous free online video editing tools I’ve found in my research. The free plan lets you create unlimited video projects, gives you access to all basic editing tools, and allows you to export your videos in 480p output resolution without watermark!” (Lua, 2019).
Reflection: The SAMR Model is an instructional tool to self-evaluate the role of technology in an activity. The SAMR model focuses on the intersect between technology and pedagogy with two layers concentrate on enhancing and other two on transforming. Although this is my first time learning and trying to use technology, I believe it can be a great model to use when creating activities. Simple essays can be turned into blog posts were students can research and speak to professionals all around the world.
