Spring Wellness Fair NYCCT 2016

For the Spring Wellness Fair our group presented the effects of diabetes, obesity and oral health. Research states that of those individuals newly diagnosed with Type II diabetes, 80-90% of them are also diagnosed as being obese. It has been projected that 53 million more people are to be affected by Type II diabetes from 2010 to 2025. Diabetes has been shown to increase the risk of xerostomia and periodontal disease, especially if it is uncontrolled. The research article I utilized for this project was based on a pilot study which examined the possibility of glycemic control monitoring and screening for diabetes during a dental visit, among adults who have diabetes and for those who are at risk. This was accomplished by using the gingival crevicular blood during probing. Since 81 million people are said to be prediabetic, this screening has the potential to raise patient awareness and possibly save lives while also promoting oral health 🙂
