Community Service

Service Learning Project- NYCCT Spring 2017

For this presentation I was able to reach out to a local senior community center  in Carrol Gardens, here in Brooklyn. Our primary goal was to raise oral health awareness in the elderly population and provide a  basic knowledge into the inevitable changes that occur during the aging process. We touched upon the link between oral and systemic health, nutrition, medications that can negatively impact the oral cavity, denture care and daily oral self-care. My particular role was emphasis on preventive care such as having regular dental check-ups and implementation of daily fluoride. I was also able to display various oral hygiene tools that can be used based on individual needs. Overall, this was a great experience that I will always remember. I was able to leave this presentation accomplished and proud to have shared this knowledge with the senior community.

Head Start – NYCTT Spring 2017

On May 5th our class was privileged to participate in the Head Start program, at a facility in Brooklyn. We were able to interact with the preschoolers in their classrooms and provide tooth brushing demonstrations and ask the students questions regarding their dental care to assess their dental I.Q. Soon afterward we performed a visual oral screening and applied fluoride varnish to all the students.
