VISUAL QUOTE

“Afrolicious”

For my project I decided to go with an Afrocentric theme, I admire my culture so I I express them through my designs. The quote I chose was “I am not my hair. I am not this skin. I am not your expectation no no. I am a soul that lives within.” by India Arie – I was inspired by this song that I decided to illustrate it myself. I had a few difficulties with this one because of the hair, I didn’t quite know how to represent the afro in a way that the audience could understand the meaning behind the quote. I chose this quote and images to represent the sweet sound of Ms. Arie’s music and black beauty.

NOT MY IMAGE – “Black Beauty”

I specifically chose this image because of itself, it drew me in and i admire this image. With this image there weren’t any difficulties because once I began I’d already knew what and how this image would’ve turn out to become. If I did have any issues at the matter it would’ve been the type and what color would’ve made the image pop itself. This was another representation of black beauty in itself and the colors and type said it all. Each quotation had its own way of explaining itself, for instance this one spoke through the color, type and the image itself.

“Chained Words”

Lastly, this illustration given to me and I added some thought to it and made it come to life, I wanted to show the audience that black women are not chained up by their hair, skin nor expectations in life – so that’s why i put the word NOT in bold.  In society that’s how it is being published and I wanted to create something that’s not true. I did in fact faced a few problems with this one and they were getting the words to place a type of way without having they fall apart or overlap to much, but in the end I manage to figure it out and make it work! Overall, I wanted to audience to see these images and illustrations and see the quotation within itself. The key terms for this project was HAIR, SKIN, EXPECTATIONS and that’s what I wanted the audience to think and learn about within the black community.
