Student teaching

In their student teaching assignment, our senior level students spend at least 120 hours in the classroom in middle grades (7 and/or 8) and at least 120 hours in the classroom in high school grades (10, 11, and/or 12) for a total of 240 hours.

Initially, the student teacher will observe teaching and learn from the cooperating teacher as well as familiarize themselves with the students, curriculum, and school. Gradually, the student teacher will advance to teaching independent lessons. Student teachers are expected to take responsibility in:

  • extensive lesson planning
  • instruction
  • incorporate feedback from the cooperating teacher in their future lesson planning and instruction
  • other relevant professional duties

The teaching and observation schedule is agreed on by the student teacher and cooperating teacher. At the cooperating teacher’s discretion, the student teacher can teach an average of two to three classes per day over the course of their assignment, with the number of lessons gradually increasing as the semester progresses.

Cooperating teachers are eligible to receive a 3-credit CUNY tuition waiver, valid at any CUNY campus, at the completion of the student teaching. The form to fill out is in the documents section. Note that this form should be mailed or personally delivered (not sent by email) to the address given there.

Student teachers will be evaluated by City Tech Math Education faculty twice during each of their assignments. The faculty will complete a Lesson Plan and Teaching Evaluation Form during each observation and will ask the cooperating teacher to complete the same form. At the end of the student teaching assignment, the cooperating teacher is asked to complete a Teacher Candidate Competencies Development Form to evaluate the work of the student teacher. A survey will be provided after the student teacher has completed their assignment for the cooperating teacher. The cooperating teacher is welcome to make comments and suggestions at any time. Please send feedback to Mariya Bessonov at mbessonov@citytech.cuny.edu.

Student teachers are required to have several of their lessons videotaped for their licensing examination. To videotape a student in the classroom, a signed Video Permission Form is required.
