The Emerging Scholars Program provides stipends and professional development activities to undergraduate researchers working with faculty on their scholarly activities. This experience can be transformative. Many undergraduates have presented their work at regional and national conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals.

The Emerging Scholars Program is one of many undergraduate research opportunities available at the college. It is structured to support the scholarly activities of faculty mentors, contribute to the intellectual vibrancy of the college and promote the professional development of participating students. Full-time Emerging Scholars receive a $500 stipend and are required to:

  • Attend the mandatory Orientation Meeting on Thursday September 22, 2016, from 12:45 – 2:00 pm in Namm 1001 (faculty mentors are encouraged to attend as well!).
  • Submit Part I online at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/EmergingScholars.
  • Submit a completed application Part IIA (PREA) and Part IIB (CUNYFirst Expense Reimbursement form, IRS W-9 and Consent forms) by Monday, September 19, 2016, to Ms. Chioma Okoye, Provost’s Office, Namm 320, Phone – 718.260.5560 OR Email:undergraduateresearch@citytech.cuny.edu –SUBJECT Line: ESP application

  • Work a few hours every week (~50 hours total) with their mentor.
  • First-time undergraduate researchers must attend the four Group I workshops. Returning researchers must complete four workshops from Group II. See attached ESP Application Part IIA for list of workshops.
  • In collaboration with the faculty mentor, prepare a final abstract summarizing the accomplishments of the project.  Mentors should proofread, edit, and upload it by Thursday, November 10, 2016 at a Dropbox link that will be provided later. Additionally you should prepare your poster based on your final results for a poster session event. The poster file must be uploaded to a Dropbox link by Wednesday, November 23, 2016. Signing the consent form indicates permission to publish abstracts and posters on the college website.
  • Attend the Fall 2016 Research Mixer sponsored by the Undergraduate Research Committee. Date September 15th, 2016 12:30-2:30 PM at Namm 119.
  • Participate in the Honors and Research Scholars poster session on Wednesday and Thursday, November 30th and December 1st, 2016.
  • Be a full-time student in good academic standing (exceptional part-time students are eligible for 50% stipends for 25 hours of work with their mentors). In order to receive a stipend students must be US citizens or permanent resident and have a social security card.

Attached are the Emerging Scholars Application Package Part IIA and Part IIB, RFP for research and equipment, and Student Travel Funding Request Application for the fall 2016 semester. Please help ensure that these materials are submitted by September 19, 2016 deadline. All of the forms should be filled in by computer, printed and signed, and included in the submission in order to be considered. DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER IN W9 FORM.

If multiple students are involved on a single project, then their expected individual contributions should be distinguished on each of the Pre-Research Applications.

If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail Prof. Hamid Norouzi (undergraduateresearch@citytech.cuny.edu). Thank you for considering this opportunity for our students.
