Rhetorical Analysis and Quotables-Kinga Zimnoch

Part 4: Rhetorical Analysis

Wendy Berliner is an award-winning journalist & joint CEO of the education Media Centre and author of a theoretical featured piece “Schools Killing Curiosity.” Berliner purpose of writing this was to bring attention in making a change in the school system where a student’s curiosity should be acknowledged and not dismissed. Berliners audience is educators and the public. She Includes Logos in all her research that supports her view. Pathos is shown as a way of creating a visual for the audience to feel and imagine how happy the kids are playing with cardboard boxes, broken computers, and pots and pans that were replaced with their toys. Berliner is trying to inform the audience that schools should encourage students to be curious to expand their mind with more creative knowledge.

Part 5: Notable Quotables

“Children, full of questions about things that interest them, are learning not to ask them at school. Against a background of tests and targets, unscripted queries go mainly unanswered and learning opportunities are lost” (Berliner 1).

“Teachers who concentrate on developing focus and good behavior because of the links to good academic performance, now need to take on broad that developing curiosity could be even more important” (Berliner 2).

“The questions they asked were aimed at improving their results, whereas the questions asked by more curious students were aimed at understanding a topic more deeply” (Berliner 3).
