In the featured article “Schools Are Killing Curiosity’: Why We Need to Stop Telling Children to Shut up and Learn,” Wendy Berliner tells us that schools need to encourage children to ask questions and be curious. According to the writer, the teachers should emphasize children’s curiosity, which may even be more important than emphasizing good behavior and focus. Berliner mentions that children are born curious, but the moment they start school they tend to ask fewer questions. The author uses the example of a teacher removing all toys from children and replacing them with items that made children more imaginative and creative. This approach has convinced parents and teachers about this change because of the rise of creativity and the increase in performance it brings to children. Berliner concludes by quoting Paul Howard-Jones, Professor of neuroscience and education at Bristol University, that children should be encouraged to ask questions and be curious even when it could be difficult for certain teachers.
