VIDEO ESSAY:

*instrumental*

Introduction: *play one or two clips of a kid getting angry when his mom is telling him to get off the game*

Explain the clips and show how they correlate to a gaming addiction

*SAY THIS IS A GAMING ADDICTION*

*use clips of games through each section transition and pictures*

1st section: explains what is considered a “gaming addiction”

When someone has a gaming addiction they tend to ignore their real life responsibilities and other activities just to keep playing video games. Those who have this addiction tend to feel like nothing else will give them enjoyment like the video games they play. People with this addiction tend to spend hours gaming and don’t even notice it. Some sacrifice eating and sleeping just to either level up or gain some type of achievement in these games.

This gaming disorder is most common in teens and people who are 34 and younger. But in this video we will focus on teens.

-RQ “How does gaming addiction form in teens?”

By Kamaro Dawkins

*give fun facts about gaming addiction*

Children don’t have a fully developed prefrontal cortex. The prefrontal cortex of the brain allows us to control impulses and urges.

Boys are more likely to suffer from a gaming addiction. This is due to boys’ masculinity and competitive nature.

2nd section: explains the causes and then dives into the effects of this addiction

A gaming addiction could be caused by a variety of things from mental health & dopamine (quickly explain dompaine)*use google definition*; these factors can lead to teens wanting a need for escapism. Another cause for teens having a gaming addiction could be a lack of activities to do outside. Nowadays many parents claim public parks for their toddlers and they don’t want teenagers anywhere near their newborn.  Teens relying on video games to help them escape from their reality can lead to many negative effects. Long hours of gaming could lead to physical health issues like eye strain, obesity, and causing poor posture.

3rd section:  explains the potential solutions to this addiction

*give the video clip* This Is Your Child’s Brain on Videogames | WSJ

*To help prevent this addiction, Dr.Milham says that parents should establish clear and consistent rules about the days and times of gameplay.* (don’t state this just show the clip of what Dr.Milham can do to help their teens with an gaming addiction)

I strongly agree with Dr.Milham I also believe that parents should address the underlying issues that make teens vulnerable to gaming disorder. Also, giving them positive coping mechanisms like physical activities, time in nature, or even yoga. These are all positive coping mechanisms that could help teens who struggle with this addiction.

Conclusion: Restate my research question but end with an open-ended question targeting parents so they can understand how to form a contract with their child so they can still have access to their favorite games but still avoid a serious gaming addiction.

“Instead of parents yelling and complaining about their children always being on the game they should try to speak with their kids and find out why they are so addicted to playing video games. Checking in on them mentally and physically. Parents should also form some type of contract with their kids so they could still enjoy video games but also understand their responsibilities.”
