Project Proposal – Karell Wisseh

My Research question is what role has slavery played in the American Prison System.

The message I want to convey to my audience is that the legacy of slavery continues to play a significant role in shaping the American prison system, particularly through mass incarceration and racial injustice. Slavery may have been formally abolished, but its aftermath is still deeply embedded in the criminal justice system, disproportionately affecting Black Americans. I believe it’s veryyt important to examine how documented practices like convict leasing and the criminalization of Black individuals after the Civil War laid the foundation for the (US) prison-industrial complex I see today. My target audience is students, activists, and those passionate about racial justice, especially individuals who may not fully grasp the enduring impact of slavery on modern systems of oppression so I can educate them. I’m considering creating a Podcast as my genre because it allows me to combine storytelling, and research to communicate this complex topic effectively. Using editing software like CapCut, I plan to develop a script and gather relevant footage and statistics to highlight the ongoing impact of slavery on mass incarceration. I will draw inspiration from other podcast, like the mentor text “Making A Podcast That Matters, A Guide With Examples from 23 Students” to ensure my presentation is interesting and engaging for the Audience
