RAB Proposal Paragraph – Stacey M

My research question is: What are the effects of sleep deprivation on decision-making abilities? This topic interests me because I have personally experienced the challenges of making decisions after a sleepless night, often leading to poor choices. Understanding how sleep affects our mental tasks, particularly since I value making wise decisions in my personal live. I already know that sleep deprivation can lead to decreased concentration, increased impulsivity, and worse judgment, but I want to learn more about the particular processes underlying these consequences. I intend to investigate and learn more about a few topics, including the changes that occur in the brain that arise from sleep deprivation, the different reactions that people may have to it, and methods to lessen its negative consequences on decision.

  1. OK I think this is a good RQ! Your source looks good. Wall Street Journal is a very reliable source — so it should be good! The only thing is that it is 2016. You can read it and decide if you think the information is current enough. Maybe it is!

  2. I just had a quick read of your WSJ article. I think it’s a good source even if 2016. The author cites professors of neuroscience and psychiatry, so they are experts.

  3. Hi Stacey,

I like how you take a topic such as sleep and tie it to something specific, like its effects of the brain. Since it’s personal to you, it’s probably be easier to come up with content and write. You could also maybe drag in real examples/experiments people do to to see if something is affecting their sleep in the first place, like types of beds, amount of caffeine consumed, if they’re been scrolling on their phone right before bed, etc. I like what you have so far, it seems interesting.
