My research question is: “What role does social media play in shaping public opinion during political campaigns?” This topic interests me because I see how social media constantly influences the way people think and talk about politics, especially among my generation. As someone who regularly uses platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter, I’m fascinated by how these tools can spread information and misinformation so quickly. I’ve seen how social media can mobilize people around political issues, and I want to understand more about how this process happens during elections. With the 2024 election coming up, I think it’s important to explore how social media platforms are used as political tools.
I already know that social media allows politicians to connect directly with voters and that pop culture figures often become involved in political campaigns, influencing public opinion. I’ve seen how content on platforms like TikTok can blend politics and entertainment, making it easier for younger voters to engage with political issues. I also know that these platforms can be dangerous, as they sometimes allow for the rapid spread of misinformation, which can shape opinions in harmful ways.
Some points that I plan to explore and find out more about are how political campaigns use targeted ads on social media, how influencers and celebrities play a role in shaping political conversations, and how misinformation spreads and affects voter decisions.
Here is an article I found: The new wave of pop stars who are getting young voters tuned into the 2024 election
