Saved – Andrew C

My story is about how an experience with a high school teacher saved me. At the time I was in the eleventh grade. It was the only time I had acting class during my high school experience. Although I hated the class, coincidentally Ms.T was easily one of my favorite teachers. By the end of the year the class had an assignment that made sure everyone had to act out a scene. Not only to the class but to a lunch room full of at least 100 kids. This was an extremely important assignment if you didn’t do it you would not pass the class. Ms.T simply told us “If you don’t do this there’s no hope of passing the class”.

In my head, I knew there were no other options. The day of the assignment I walked up to the microphone jittery with my palms full of sweat. As I looked at the lunchroom with a full audience of people staring at me I was petrified. Somehow when I ended up acting out my scene I did it with full confidence. I said my script perfectly word for word. Once we received our grade on paper Ms.T wrote to me “Even though you hated the thought of doing this you tried your best and did great”. I believe this was the very moment that saved me. Ms.T showed me an extremely important lesson that day. Certain things in life are not optional, it’s necessary to grow as a person.

  1. Andrew — This is a good start!

You write: The day of the assignment I walked up to the microphone jittery with my palms full of sweat. [GOOD CSD!] As I looked at the lunchroom with a full audience of people staring at me I was petrified. Somehow when I ended up acting out my scene I did it with full confidence. [OK NOW develop more here – create a SCENE – SHOW me your acting scene – CSD about the lunchroom and the faces staring at you. HOW many people WHAT did you say? WHAT piece of theatre were you acting? HOW was your breathing, your heart rate SHOW ME you being “petrified” THEN you could SHOW me –HOW did you feel at the end? WHAT did you do at the end? WHAT was the reaction of the audience?]

Do you have more memories/scenes/events about how Ms. T saved you? Can this be developed into more than just this one time…More details on how you changed and gained confidence and grew through Ms. T’s theatre class? On HOW Ms T herself was a big influence on your school life?

Remember you are looking for the seed of what can become a bigger essay for the Unit 1 assignment.

  2. I like all the imagery you put to convey your dislike towards doing things in front of people. 100 people is kinda crazy ngl. I also have that fear. I’m glad your teacher, who ironically taught something you didn’t like, ended up pushing you to your full potential. Nice story!
