Mentor Quote – Zubair Abdullah

“I bet you he (me) is going to fail that test”

I had a time when I had to overcome somebody’s mistaken perception of my ability when I was in school before the covid days. I was not known as the smartest or the dumbest person in school, I did not really want to do any work or anything, so I was barely passing some of my classes back then.  Everyone thought I just cannot do some stuff. When one of the tests for math came up, I overheard one of my classmates speaking to another one of my classmates, saying that I was going to fail that test since “I did not know anything about the topic or just didn’t understand it.” I felt like I wanted to prove them and everyone else wrong. I studied and studied. The date of the test came by, I felt like I knew everything. I felt like i knew most of the questions. I have passed with a 94% and told everyone what I gotten.

  1. This is a story of triumph! But you need a lot more details. What you wrote is pretty thin! You need CSD concrete specific details!

WHO said this to you? If it was someone you overheard — WHO did you overhear? WHere were you when you heard this? WHY was someone talking about you? Were others picking on you? What was going on at that time of your life that made you a slacker-type of student? NOT clear — was this a Covid school year?

What exactly were the steps of “studied and studied” that made you learn all the material?

Was overhearing that other student talked about you and thought you were a failing student — was this a transformative event? Did this change you for good?

  2. I’m proud of you for passing that test and proving everyone wrong. I’ve been in many situations in the past where people had mistaken me for what I could actually accomplish. And the best part of that is actually turning around and doing what they told you that you wouldn’t be able to accomplish.
