Brooklyn Boulder’s response to the killing of George Floyd sparked outrage at the way the company used the event to promote their climbing gyms. It also publicly opened up an ongoing history of racial discrimination in their workplace and especially at the corporate level. BKB denied some of the accusations and says is working with a DEI consultant to work on their problems. Most of the accusations came from employees based in NYC and coincidentally (or should we say conveniently) every NYC employees who were furloughed due to COVID, were fired without previous notice on July 2nd due to, according to BKB, being financially unable to keep supporting their staff. At the same time, BKB announced the opening of its new location the following month.
