Assignment 3

The vision Filippo Thomas Marinetti had for his immediate future was to reject past ways of thinking and move forward with speed, machinery, and the industry. He felt people In Italy should stop thinking in the past and have forward thinking. Rodchenko believed that technology was ruining art , this is interesting because he kinda of put things in motion. I disagree I believe technology has definitely improved art in many ways. I believe technology broadens the horizon of an artist’s creativity. At the same time designers must make sure they don’t make the technology take away from there creativity and style. Lissitzky reasoned that the future of arts lay in there potential to be integrated into the world . I think he liked the idea of what technology has brought to the world, and he was truly appreciative of it.

When it comes to the common views of all of the authors , for the most part I believe they all like the idea of design and what it can achieve if done the right way.  There are definitely some things they would disagree on though. Marinetti wasn’t a huge fan for old ways of thinking, and believe you should focus on the future and developing new things.

El Lissitzky didn’t believe that  there was such a thing as new , he believed that new was old with a few changes to them, To him art doesn’t evolve. In the “who are we” article it talks about  how they are a new generation of artists who are advancing  their artwork with technology.

Assignment 2

Language is the method that humans use to communicate with one another. There are different types of language like receptive language which refers to how an infant would learn language. There’s also expressive language which is anything involving speaking, gestures, waving , pointing, writing, facial expressions, and vocalizations and there’s pragmatic language which is body movement and tone. These are the amplifiers and fine-tuners of communication and can be an important key to design. The difference between language and other forms of communication is that language changes a lot, do too the fact that new words can be created, but other forms communication usually remain unchanged.

Symbols and icons can represent most things in the world. Symbols/icons are related to language because they are used as a form of communication. Symbols and icons can help designers to communicate things visually. People are drawn to certain symbols and icons, these symbols/icons are also a universal thing, so when making designs most people no matter the language would understand. People interact with symbols and icons every day and don’t even realize. After reading these articles, I realized how powerful symbols/icons can be when used the right way. Signs are employed in general communication, by things like pictures or drawings put on them to represent something, like a stop sign, destination signs, etc.

Language and design go hand and hand. We use language as a tool for communication with other people. Writers use words to communicate with their readers, while designers use visual language to communicate with the consumer. Without design and language working in harmony, the communication will be unclear and will confuse the consumer. Design and language are related to one another in today’s culture because to make successful a piece you need both of them. Once you figure out the language being using in a certain culture you then can create design elements that would fit into the culture. seeing how a certain culture perceives things and how they use language, can give a huge boost to their design process and put them in the right direction to making good work.

Assignment 1b

Design and the way we think about design has evolved over the years. Design plays a huge role in the modern business world. As designers, we must arrange elements in a way that is compelling to the audience while still making them creative. In one of the articles it talks about how people focus on the mechanical side of things way more than the design part, but there equally important. When in the design world people don’t look at the work we do equally, they tend to not care about the design part of things. Its our job to understand that design and how somethings looks plays a big  factor into why a consumer will buy a product, we have the power too bring life to a product.

What distinguishes the field of design from other creative occupations is in design we are responsible for using visual compositions to solve problems and communicate ideas through imagery, color, etc. I believe in other creative occupations they are not always trying to make the connection between the company and the public. In The “Munari Design as Art” article it talks about why they don’t grab for just any artist, they grab for graphic designers because the graphic designer will make the connection between the art and the public. This is very important when designing anything because you need to grab the attention of the consumer. Something else that was interesting in the  “Munari design as art” is the article talks about how people at one point in time believed that an object was beautiful as long as it was functional. Some people still have this mindset, and I find it to be untrue because the way that something is presented to the consumer plays a huge factor in their purchase of the product.

The reason designers should concern themselves with unsolvable theoretical questions is because it will help with there thinking and improve there design process. The role technology plays in the design world is it creates limitless options in design. Due to technology all types of design techniques are being shared between artists all over, which makes for better designs. One of the biggest problems designers face today is the strictness that goes on in the business world when there trying to design. There are so many standards and rules that have to be followed that it takes away from the creative side of graphic design. It can be extremely hard to create something great when you are not free to do what you want. Designers are responsible for solving this problem because if we don’t start reversing some of those standards and going back to being creative then design will lose its value. I also think it important because some people don’t believe that design is important, and this is probably the reason they set specific rules for design so there isn’t much time spent on the design aspect.
