Improvement Activities

Previous: Teaching Effectiveness

I have completed a number of workshops and educational opportunities focused on teaching as well as in areas of professional development that support my functional title to then better serve the needs of students through improving those skill sets.

Teaching Portfolio Workshop
-Prof. Junior Tidal created a Teaching Portfolio Workshop for those of us in the library who do not primarily do instruction based on his own experience of compiling his Teaching Portfolio. This workshop helped inform the creation of my Teaching Portfolio as well as led to a journal article authored by all of us who had been through the workshop to serve as a tool for others in the field.

Alma Certification
I attended the ExLibris Academy trainings to become Alma Certified and Administrator for our campus instance of the library system Alma, which is an essential program for all ordering, cataloguing and circulating of books to our students.

Open Education Resources (OER) Workshop
-I learned more about OER, Creative Commons, copyright and how to find and use resources in teaching.
Creative Commons final project: https://ccadventures.neocities.org/CCadventures.html

Online Learning Accessibility Training
-I learned best practices and tools for making digital documents accessible in teaching.

Video Production for Online Teaching (online workshops) at Graduate Center
-I learned best practices for creating videos for online teaching and tutorials.

Information Delivery Services (IDS) User Group Meetings and Conferences
-I attend IDS meetings and conferences nearly every semester to learn more about Interlibrary Loan and ways to make effective uses of different tools for the research needs of students and faculty. These are also always valuable opportunities to share my own knowledge and work with colleagues from other libraries.

Interlibrary Loan Meetup at Metropolitan Library Council
-Similarly, I attend these meetups which usually occur once a semester. They serve as great opportunities to learn from other Interlibrary Loan colleagues and to collectively and collaboratively share knowledges and processes.

WALDO / Fordham Presents: What’s Mine is Yours? Resource Sharing & Academic Libraries (webinar)
-I learned more about copyright in the context of Interlibrary Loan and different available resources.

How to Create a Trans-Inclusive Workplace (webinar)
-I learned tools for creating a more trans-inclusive workplace, which I think can be extended to the library and college as a whole.

Change the Subject: Libraries, Labels, and Activism at Columbia University
-Through this screening and talk, I learned a lot about how we as librarians can rethink outdated and harmful labels and categorizations that we use in our materials.

ILLiad 9.1 Web Pages Course through IDS (online)
-I attended this 4-week course to learn how to update the Interlibrary Loan webpages accessible and responsive, so that students and faculty can more easily use and request materials through Interlibrary Loan.
