Introduction

My name is Krystal Good and I am a register nurse. I love nursing it has provided me with a unique skill set that I use in every aspect of my life. I chose to become a nurse because of personal reasons. My first child was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes at 7 months of age. I was young and I never even heard about diabetes. I was completely in the dark, confused and  scared. How would I care for my daughter? Do I really have to inject her with insulin everyday for her life for her to live? I had some many questions that where not being answered by the healthcare professionals treating my daughter. At this time in 1999 she was the youngest child in New York to be diagnosed with Diabetes. I felt like my daughter was part of a research project.

There was one ray of light in all that confusion and uncertainty. Nurse Wright. She taught me what I needed to know, and gave me needed emotional and physical support. She helped me adjust to the new needs of my daughter and come to terms with her diagnosis. After spending nearly three weeks in the hospital my daughter was released home. I felt more able to care for her on a daily basis, but how would I prevent complications of her illness? My answer to that question was to become a nurse, and that is exactly what I did!

The Spring semester of 2001, I enrolled in Kingsborough Community College Nursing Associate Degree program. I obtained my A.A.S in June 2005. I have worked in a hospital setting for the past six years. I am currently two weeks away of completely my baccalaureate degree and I am so excited. As I continue my studies and continue to move upward in the nursing profession I want to be able to affect the lives of those I cared for like Ms. Wright did for me. Establishing a trusting relationship is the key to effective nursing care.
