Philosophy

Nursing is a field that’s concerned with providing holistic, kind, respectable, compassionate, caring, and empathetic care, to those who are ill and are in need. It is these same values that were instilled in me as child (by my mother), that led me to choose this demanding, yet fulfilling nursing profession. Doing unto others, as one would like to be done unto self, is another philosophy that governs my life. I would like my loved ones, and I, to be treated with respect, kindness, and honesty, and be provided with the best possible care. Due to this sentiment, I do my best to place self in others shoes, see the situation from their perspective, and implement measures that will bring about the best possible outcome.

Treating patients with respect, integrity, and dignity irrespective of race, gender, age, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status is a must. Upholding respect, integrity, and dignity is extremely imperative. Everyone should be treated equitably and be provided with high quality care. Caring is the essence of nursing, and part of providing quality care, is the responsibility of each nurse to advocate for, and empower their patients. At times, patients feel overwhelmed, cannot speak for themselves, or are afraid to ask pertinent questions regarding their health. Also, some do not receive proper care that’s due to them. It is the duty of a prudent nurse to advocate for the patient, and guarantee that they receive care and services warranted. As patient advocate, my goal is to make the patient feel like they’re in control (autonomous), empowered, and involved, and can make informed decisions about their health. Nursing requires caring for, and assisting those who are ill, and cannot help themselves. Through continuing education, implementation of evidence-based practice, use of emotional intelligence, and applying Jean Watson’s theory of caring to promote wellness and restoration of health; I plan to educate patients, ensure that rights are protected, and provide the best possible holistic care that I can give.
