CUNY Explorers – Post 3

The workplace culture is very welcoming. During meetings with my supervisor, she likes to start with breathing exercises, and a 2-minute meditation. This is to focus our minds on the task at hand. To focus. My supervisor is very friendly but expects me to be extremely independent in doing jobs. Since she manages everything else, she makes it very clear that she relies on the interns to do their finest. Since I am a newcomer to the job, she is very patient with me as well as everyone else and encourages us to give feedback on what we can do to improve things. I am still learning the internship layout but things are working very well.

Interns can come in casual wear. as long as their outfit is related to City Tech to show they are one of the tour guides. My typical work day for my internship is Monday and Wednesday. When I have time I start recording the footage needed. On Friday I arrive at 9:45 for a meeting. We have 10 AM and if we have in-person workshops we usually do one or two. My supervisor mostly communicates by email or Slack. Informing people when things are happening or what to expect. On Fridays, we meet in person for an hour to an hour and a half. I use After Effects, Premiere, and Media Encoder.

CUNY Explorers – Post 2

My role in the company is as a Communication Design Intern. This means I am responsible for the media and ways to improve company awareness at the school. Which means Photography, Video Editing and Animation. Recently I wasbeing trained to help with tours and provide my input on what we can do better. During my first in-person tour, I touredthe COMD department. In my opinion, I could have done better at public speaking.

I knew the answer. I was extremely shy to say it in front of people. I came to this internship site by looking at the internship website about CUNY Explorers. I scheduled an interview in the Nanm Building on the fifth floor with my supervisor. Her name is Illia Silva, and along with alumni and seniors, I am trained to give tours of the building. It was one interview and I was extremely nervous but due to me being a Communications Design student and my availability, I was accepted. I didn’t have to wait long. But after getting a job in December we started on January 11th.

The questions I was asked were the usual interview questions, like tell me about yourself, what do you like? What are you skilled at? And how available am I? In terms of design work, I started planning what I wanted to do with the various projects I was given.

CUNY Explorers – Post 1

Hello! My name is Jaaziah Cureton and I will admit this first but here we go. I am an intern at the CUNY Explorers. A public organization that helps high school students and middle schoolers. Our clients are students from families who believe college is unaffordable, and some of them are first-generation students. They come on a tour with their teachers or chaperones. So we tour the school. I am a COMD student, and I am responsible for video editing, graphic design, and motion design.

This is used to attract people who want to attend college. A collaboration between CUNY’s Office of K-16 Initiatives and the New York City Department of Education resulted in the founding of CUNY Explorers in 2016. This was part of the Mayor’s College Access for All initiative. In the department where I work, there is a hybrid approach. A virtual tour on Zoom or an in-person tour on campus can be arranged. On Friday we meet in person for meetings. When I am not on tour,I work at home or at school on design work.

The article CUNY Explorers: Inspiring Generations to Attend University explains its functions. CUNY Explorers, according to program supervisor and former QC student Jaclyn Eng, introduce middle school children to collegeeducation. This is so that each student leaves with the belief that college is right for them and the drive to achieve their goals. To ensure that middle school students understand that it is never too early to start thinking about college and that they can take action even now to make their goals come true, CUNY Explorers has this as one of its key objectives. Because of its helpful character across generations, initiatives like CUNY Explorers, according to Mejia, are essential for better transfer between educational levels.
