Drug addiction is a major problem in America. Opioids are the most commonly used illecit drugs. Many Americans died as a result of an overdose.The purpose of this research paper is to learn and understand how drugs affect the human body including oral health. Most drug abusers neglect their oral hygiene. There is a connection between drug abuse and poor oral health. Dental patients with substance abuse have more caries and periodontal disease than the general population. As a dental hygienist, I have to learn how to treat these patients. Building a mutual trust is crucial because most of these patients might be hesitant to receive dental treatment. I have to be familiar with the drugs available in the state/region where I work as a dental hygienist. Many of these substance have a devastating effects on oral health.
