This outreach program was sponsored by Colgate at the Greater New York Dental Meeting. Everyone from the Citytech dental hygiene program participated at the event. One group was assigned with games and entertainment. Another group was assigned to oral screening. Few of the students were assigned to assist with directing the kids to the different activities. Our group worked with kids in toothbrushing. We showed them how to properly brush their teeth and told them to do it twice a day. It was a positive learning experience.
I think community service and volunteering are the most fulfilling aspect in this profession. As a dental hygiene student, giving back what you learn is the least you can do for others. It helps us to prepare for what it is out there after school. It helps us to understand our role in the community. It is not only cleaning teeth but building trust and relationship with others.
