Fusion is a dental developmental anomaly in which two tooth buds developed as one large crown. This is common in incisors. Etiology is uncertain but it might be associated to a genetic predisposition or trauma during tooth development. This condition is sometimes confused with gemination. The difference between the two is fusion has two roots and the child may look like they have a missing tooth whereas gemination has one root and it looks like the child developed an extra tooth. As a dental hygienist treating pediatric patients, it is imperative to learn the cause and nature of the condition. Dentist/dental hygienist should keep an eye for cavity development where enamel is in contact. A referral to a specialist should be recommended.
