I pitched an idea to my co-worker Jonalyn and my supervisor Alison to advertise the Brooklyn Nutcracker. My idea was to illustrate a stage for the background, place performers onto the stage and somewhere would be titled “The Brooklyn Nutcracker” while placing other information such as the date, logos, etc.
They loved the idea so then I began working on the project. For this project, I wanted to work straight from Adobe Illustrator. The first thing I began to do was create the curtains for the stage and I wanted to make them red and gold. I wanted to make the curtains red and gold so they can look similar to Kings Theatre. Kings Theatre is where the Brooklyn Nutcracker is normally performed so I thought that was the best approach for the illustration. Next, I made the backdrop a simple dark purple-ish color. Then I made the platform of the stage light blue. After that, I started illustrating a ballerina character to place on the stage. Then I started struggling with where I wanted to put the logo so I decided to make a circular pattern for the backdrop and place the logo in the middle. I wanted to add some lighting to highlight the ballerina so I added that within the image. Finally, I wanted to illustrate a crowd for the show so I did that.
After I was done with everything, I sent the project to my supervisor and we had a meeting later that week about it. She liked the project a lot but she wanted to see more diversity represented within the image. I promised to add more characters to the image during our next meeting.
