The Love That Blinds one Another

As Gary Zukav once said, “A power struggle collapses when you withdraw your energy from it. Power struggles become uninteresting to you when you change your intention from winning to learning about yourself.” that suggests the boundary of the power inequality can separate relationships we had from one another, no matter if it’s wealth or chosen to be number one. However, we may not have the power to change our fate but we have the power to influence the people surround us and our circumstances. Frankly, we procured self-gain from learning who we are as a person. In “Midnight Summer’s Dream” written by William Shakespeare convey a message of inverse of revolution, power, and love with the use of setting and characters.

We don’t know what it’s like to walk in someone else’s shoes until we had experience it first handed. Hermia, a royalty who falls in love with Lysander becomes the center attentions for two “attractive” men who are Lysander and Demetrius and Helena, a friend of Hermia wishes to be her shoes due to the fact, Helena always wants to win Demetrius’s heart. However, once they enter a forest, a unknown territory that governs magics, the role between Hermia and Helena had been switched. According to Hermia, she stated, “We, Hermia, like two artificial gods, Have with our needles created both one flower, Both on one sampler, sitting on one cushion, Both warbling of one song, both in one key, As if our hands, our sides, voices and minds, Had been incorporate. So we grow together, Like to a double cherry, seeming parted, But yet an union in partition; Two lovely berries moulded on one stem; So, with two seeming bodies, but one heart; Two of the first, like coats in heraldry, Due but to one and crowned with one crest. And will you rent our ancient love asunder, To join with men in scorning your poor friend? It is not friendly, ’tis not maidenly: Our sex, as well as I, may chide you for it,Though I alone do feel the injury.” Which leads to the the end of their friendship, once Hermia become jealous of Helena when she became the center of the attention. It enhances the importance that we do not like being the sore thumb in the third wheel in a relationship.

Our surroundings influences our behavior that empower ourselves to do anything we wanted. The city that the people such as Hermia and her “companions”inhabited, has regulated laws and constitutions in place to uphold the chaotic destruction. It is an embodiment of security and comfort that keep Athens safe from endless massacre bounds to happen anytime soon. Hermia had such control in her relationship with Lysander before they entered the forest. When Pluck cast a spell on Lysander in term of falling in a love with first sight. A forest represents the dark that holds tragedies and a new beginning of becoming wild. Once they entered the forest, Hermia lost the control she will ever have with her lover after gaining freedom.

I notice the stanzas of the conservation for someone who are wealthy compared to the one who are in poverty are significantly different. Take an example of Hermia’s speech compared to Bottom who is one of the directors in the play. When Hermia stated “ My good Lysander, I swear to three, by Cupid’s strongest bow, by his best arrow, with the golden head, by tbe the simplicity of Venus’ doves, By that which knitteth souls and prosper love” , her stanzas rhythm with two couplets simultaneously. On the other hand, Bottom who said “A good piece of work, I assure you, and a merry. Now good Peter Quince, call forth your actors by the scroll. Master spread yourselves” indicated his status as someone who is poor due to the fact he couldn’t rythme like the royal people.

“True love” is a form of control that one can have in their relationship. According to Hermia, she stated “ My good Lysander, I swear to three, by Cupid’s strongest bow, by his best arrow, with the golden head, by tbe the simplicity of Venus’ doves, By that which knitteth souls and prosper love” in the city of Athens suggested in which she casts a spell that tests their love they had with each other. The fairies originally has control with their magic unlike the human. Although, Pluck is considered as a fairy, he had taken a role of a Cupid and he put Hermia’s spell to the test by applying fairy dust on Lysander and Demetrius eyes. They will wake up to only fall in love with the first person they saw.As Hermia’s spell fades away so does their love they had with one of another.

Frankly as far we tries to withhold the power of control in our lives, it can get out of our hands. The outside factor advocates the disaster occurred in our daily lives.
