In summarizing the coursework, and assignments, that have prepared me to work with the homeless population I would include resource development, research methods, and management concepts. These courses inspired me to rise above goals to counsel those in need, and become more of an administrator advocating for quality services. Through working with the homeless population I have realized that those who are passionate about assisting others are the ones that provide quality services. There are many that are just doing a job, and at the end of the day it is not about the services, but putting in your eight hours. I am actually looking at attending John Jay College for my master’s in public administration.
Resource development gave me insight into the importance of funding a non-profit organization. Research development actually helped me see the importance of assessments, surveys, and looking at ways increase the quality of services provided. Management concepts is helping me to look at the different theories of management that would be most effective in running a non-profit agency. I am currently in a management concepts course, and find the work challenging but important to achieve my goals. The main reason I enrolled in college was to better assist my clients, whom were homeless and in need of many different services. Through these management based courses, I feel that I would still like to counsel clients, but I would also like to work behind the scenes to advocate for increased quality in the services provided.
