New Experiences

After week 4, it has honestly been really fun working at the internship. I’ve gained a lot of insight on how to do work for clients rather than just doing work for myself that I find comfortable and good from my perspective. I’ve been able to put forward some work that I can honestly say that I am proud of and would still fit into my own style of work. Nothing has been too challenging for me and if it was at some point, I took my time to work through it and improve my overall skill level. It benefited me and taught me things that I can take away and use for later projects. Having the freedom of wfh can be challenging because I can get easily distracted by things that I like to do, but all in all, I’m able to steel myself and get my work done at a good overall pace for me and have it be good quality as well. Due to the nature of my work and that I’m looking to get into animation or graphic design in general, this internship has helped me advance my skills somewhat and be more flexible when making works for others and not just something to appease me and the professor that I’m turning it in for. If there was one thing, I WISH I could do, it would be to work in a more team and office-based Environment so I can get a general understanding of the other side of the coin and pick up some tricks and trades for others in my field at my position rather than just a supervisor. However, I am still grateful for the opportunity I have gotten and hope to learn more things before the internship class ends.

Work Life

After working here for about 3 weeks, I’ve gotten down a general routine of how to go about my days. This is a work from home job unless needed for photoshoots or filming, so there isn’t really any restrictions or rules so long as I get the work done in a timely fashion. I do however still abide by my own rules to make sure that I am not behind or slacking, I usually start between 10 and 12 pm and work for about 8 to 10 hours depending on my availability during the week. I message/meet with my supervisor first thing once I’m ready to start and they’ll give me the project or feedback on a current one that I am working on and from there I start to work. Because I’m mostly using aftereffects and do have some knowledge of it, there are still a lot of things that I have to get accustomed to and tricks that I like to teach myself, so I end up on YouTube looking up different techniques that I can apply the current project and go through them myself and see if they fit or not. I usually take small breaks in between the day like for water or grabbing a snack and then continue. Once I’m done for the day I will bundle up whatever I’ve actually finished which is a few ideas and concepts and either place them in shared folder or through wetransfer and call it a day. And that usually how my days have been going so far, barely any hiccups.

The Interviewing Process

When it came to choosing an internship, I wasn’t having much luck when applying on my own through hiring apps, as I would apply to several but none would respond. With the help of one of my professors, I was able to get into contact with another one, and they set up an interview with me immediately in the morning that same day. It was a meeting through zoom so there wasn’t a need to go in person and I could share my work with them digitally. The only person to interview me was the one that I currently work for now and he asked me questions about my experience with the programs that would be used and when I took certain classes for them to gauge how long I have been using the program in question. After going through my portfolio, asking me a variety of questions and then giving me the general rundown of how they operate, I was immediately hired and given work to do on the spot, connected to Dropbox and got straight to it on my first project.
