- This electronic copy of J.D. Salinger’s short story collection, Nine Stories, contains great examples of how to punctuate dialogue (using quotation marks, indenting and starting a new line with every new speaker). Take a look at page 3 and his story, “A Perfect Day for Bananafish.” Even though Salinger doesn’t use many dialogue tags (e.g., “he explained,” “she said”), you can easily follow along with and picture the conversation that is taking place.
