36 Hours in New York City

New York is famously known for theatre, museums, and fashion, however, the sports culture in New York is in integral part of the city’s landscape. New York City offers opportunities to play sports all over the city. With famous athletes repping the city (Aaron Judge, Kyrie Irving, Gary Sanchez, Kevin Durant, etc) sports enthusiasts can be found all over the city, working on their craft. You can even find famous basketball players playing in public courts like the Holcombe Rucker Park, an infamous basketball court located in Harlem at 155th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard. Nevertheless, sports are never far; In a city with limited space, sports still find a way to dominate the scene.

Jessica Moon Concierge Presentation

As the Chief Concierge of The Bentley Hotel, I have prepared this training video to inform the concierge and GSA about Roosevelt Island as a tourist location.
As a luxury boutique hotel, it is important for our guests to enjoy the style and flair that NYC has to offer, while escaping the fast-paced setting of Midtown Manhattan.

Concierge Marketing Assignment

The attraction that I chose for the ‘Concierge Marketing Assignment’ is Roosevelt Island. The island is considered to be a part of Manhattan, and is easily accessible by tram, located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. For a small fare of a Metrocard swipe, you can visit the island and explore its’ historical attractions such as: The Blackwell House (built in 1796) which is NYC’s sixth-oldest farmhouse, Chapel of the Good Shepard, a Gothic Revival-styled church (1889), Roosevelt Island, renamed in 1973, in honor of former President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who served as governor of New York from 1929 to 1933, the Smallpox Hospital Ruins, a destination for those who fancy eccentric selfie backgrounds (1856), and more. On the island, you can find historical structures that date back as far as the late 1700’s. The event season is held in Four-Seasons Park from May through October such as: The Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival (free), pop-up library events with readings of children’s books (family-friendly), Park and Play with Sing for Hope’s Artist-Designed Piano (anyone can perform, free), fundraising events, #AscendWithPride (LGBTQ+ friendly), and movie showing events for those who enjoy outdoor movie dates.
This travel destination is unique because many New Yorkers themselves have never heard/been to Roosevelt Island. It is a place that has been constructed with NYC history (literally), full of architectural treasures, and not to mention that there is an activity for everyone during their seasonal events. It is an extension of NYC, and yet, the history imbedded in the island reminds you that you are not far from the city. Easily accessible, a multitude of events, and a perspective of the NYC skyline like you’ve never seen before- all great reasons for a tourist to visit this obscure island that is full of NYC culture and life.

Times Square Edition Hotel Reflection

In what way do you believe you need to prepare for a career in the luxury hotel market?
I believe that I need a lot of preparation for a career in the luxury hotel market. I find networking to be an important aspect of life in general, but especially when trying to land a coveted job. It is important to put your best foot forward, and make a good impression. The industry professionals at The Edition Hotel in Times Square were knowledgeable in other sectors of the hotel that they are not in. This shows me that I would have to improve on my knowledge of hotels, such as the “back of the house”, all sectors of the hotel, and have a general idea of every position in a hotel.

What was the most significant information you learned while at The Edition Hotel?
By far the most significant information that I learned while at The Edition Hotel was through the conversation I had with the 3 employees of the hotel. I had a hard time not asking countless questions, due to it being my first time being presented with the opportunity to speak freely with someone who is in a position that I am interested in. I learned that they did not start with the position that they have now. In fact, it was their exploration in the hospitality field that led them to a position at a luxury hotel. It was fascinating to learn that they all came from vastly different college/work careers. The conversation relieved some pressure on me to figure out exactly what sector of the hotel industry I would like to work in; There is always a means of change. I look forward to more opportunities to meet with industry professionals, as it will allow me to gain different perspectives and broaden the scope of my future.

Jessica Moon

Hello. I am a returning college student, currently in the second semester of my first year. My academic experience has not been a consistent one, due to personal reasons that transpired during my last year of high school. As time had passed, I recognized the need for a college education/degree. I absolutely do not regret my years of not being in school, as I had the opportunity, and time, to gain valuable work experiences that have since inspired me to pursue Hospitality Management as a possible career path.

During the past few years, I was able to invest all of my time into working full time jobs. My very first job was at an Italian bakery for almost the entirety of my high school career. Since then, I’ve had various jobs in different cafes, and have been in assistant management, supervisor, and management positions. In these positions, I trained employees, ordered inventory, organized for payroll, managed social media accounts, etc. I feel comfortable handling matters regarding customer service, employee disputes, and brainstorming solutions to increase sales. My strengths are strongest when I feel confident and passionate. I genuinely enjoy the job that I have, and deeply value the jobs that I’ve had. When I enter into a new place of work, I am eager and willing to learn- regardless of the experiences that I have had. I believe that my unassuming, yet ambitious attitude is an advantage that allows me to progress in any workspace.

When I was 15, I did not even imagine that I would interested in pursuing a career in the food service industry, but what started as a part-time job in high school became a passion. Although I’ve had years of experience, I will continue to educate myself through my studies, and through acquiring new skills. I know that there is so much left for me to learn.
