Finding your public voice

Unit 3 Project and Artist Statement

My process for my project was coming together rather slowly. There was information I had collected from fellow runners. My question to them was to explain what makes them run long distances. I also asked what keeps them going on these long runs. I requested for them to send me a one to two minute video in their natural element. Nothing fancy and to just be themselves. I was disappointed in that I couldn’t use the 3 videos my fellow runners was so kind to supply me with. I wanted to use slides and videos, but sometimes what you envision doesn’t exactly unfold. I went into my project confident and excited that it will all come together. I’ve been compiling my information and making some flash cards to write down the most important information I wanted to use. Or better said key points.

I had some technical difficulties putting my project together in a you-tube format. I thought everything would be seamless. But I learned very quickly that if you are not technically savvy this can be very challenging and would be a set up for failure. I wasn’t able to have the guidance of my niece whose an expert at this due to international travel. My you-tube was not a success so I had to rethink and use another method that I could navigate a little easier. I chose to do an infographic. It wasn’t that easy for me due to my lack of experience in this area. I tried to convey the message that I was aiming for without my voice, no audio que sound effects and no background music.

The most important point I was hoping to make is to convey why runners choose to continue to run long distances despite all of the obstacles they encounter. It is very easy to get lost trying to make this point without digressing from the main topic. I did not get to create the you-tube video I envisioned. I felt it would’ve been the best way to keep my audience interested even if they weren’t a runner. I wanted to make it interesting and keep the audience engaged, excited via the audio and visual effects.

I’ve learned through out this project that I have to become more tech savvy. I need to utilize my time more wisely without getting distracted by looking into more information that I don’t need to. It doesn’t have to take that long. If I start to add new information unnecessarily I will lose the audience. Since I couldn’t do the video I had to switch gears quickly. I decided to change it to the infographic and even that was moving along a lot slower than expected. Some of the variables that contributed to my delay was combined with work, personal commitments and another class project. My main focus was to stay calm, show up to class everyday and continue to work through the obstacles. It was very important for me to stay focused, not get disillusioned and know that I can do this. It’s very easy for a student to start not showing up to class if they aren’t doing assignments, falling behind or just not feeling that they are measuring up to the expectations of the class. It’s just that much easier to hideaway. But that only makes the situation worse. It’s important to seek help, ask questions, put yourself in that awkward uncomfortable position to get what you need done. The worst thing someone can say is they don’t know or can’t help. You must not give up and keep trying and keep showing up. If there is one main attribute that running has taught me is that…be strong, don’t give up and keep trying. And to always, always have a plan b. I would have to say that my running has given me strength allowing me to not stress the setback of my project. I was determined to figure it out and complete it. This is equal to the confidence boost that running affords you. It’s one of the key messages that I was hoping to convey through my alternate plan b… the infographic.

I hope my audience learns of the hunger that runners possess goes beyond just running long distances. There is so much more to it, not just physically but mentally. Everyone has a story as to why they run. I incorporated real life stories into my infographic of people who went through some very traumatic life changing events in their life. These runners benefited from their already running experience and another didn’t have any. I want to be able to bring to life what they felt inside, even it was just through pictures. I also included some random pictures to show how happy some people were, even with some physical limitations and disabilities. It would be great if my audience is left with excitement and desiring to give this sport a try. That they too would be craving a runner’s high. This in turn would turn into a permanent life style for physical and mind wellness. As some will say and attest to, “running is cheaper than therapy”.

Artist Statement-

My intended audience consists of young individuals or Cuny students. Global hunger is the issue I chose for my audience because it is something that few people discuss, yet it is something that everyone should be aware of. because millions of people die each year just because they do not have enough food to consume Many individuals are unaware of this subject. I picked them as my target audience since it would allow them to read a short and simple text. The facts I supplied will be relevant to people’s lives and the terrible condition that millions of people face on a daily basis. Every night, around 811 million people go to bed hungry. And nothing has been done to address this big crisis, and according to the UN, if we don’t take any efforts to fix this issue now, the number of hungry people will more than double by 2030. The information I obtained is designed to enlighten and make my audience aware of this scenario since my audience is cuny students, most of them are in their youth, and I feel that if youth take a step to solve this global disaster. Then we will be able to resolve this problem.

For unit 3, I plan to create a photo essay that will be published as a short newspaper article because I believe it is the best way to reach the most cuny students and young people to educate them on my topic of global hunger, and it is simple to capture the interest of people of young ages with a picture essay. In a brief piece, I will present a range of images and data about hunger issues and explain them well. Because it competes for space in the newspaper, a newspaper article is generally brief and to the point, depending on the subject. The most significant information comes first, followed by the details. It also generally includes visual references such as graphs or graphics to assist the reader in understanding. It will also take little time to read, which will benefit the reader if they have a lot of work and little leisure time. I feel that most people who are just starting out do not follow the news or read many books because they do not have the time. The news story would be on Canva and would not be removed without cause. They may come across news stories and other resources while researching their career on the internet.Short paragraphs, columns of text, pictures, quotations, and the writer’s interpretation are some of the characteristics of the news piece about world hunger.
This, I feel, this is the most successful method for reaching cuny students.

I contemplated doing a YouTube podcast video or a TikTok at first because most of the cuny students are young and spend the majority of their time on social media. As a result, I was considering doing a YouTube podcast video or a TikTok video. But when I was recording the YouTube podcast, I realized that my narration sounded terrible, and I didn’t like it this way since I tried so many times and each time it got worse, and I’m afraid that if I publish it, no one would be interested in watching the entire video. Then I opted against making a YouTube video.I feel I lack the necessary skills to create videos or podcasts. I attempted to produce a TikTok video, but the problem was that I couldn’t make a film longer than 3 minutes, which I believe is insufficient for my tale. And I doubt I’d be able to generate anything good through YouTube or TikTok videos. As a consequence, I decided to write an essay or a short article for my audience that featured visuals and data regarding the topic I chose. And in that piece, I used more graphics and statistics than words because my audience would not be interested in reading the entire article if I used long sentences.to improve it and make it more interesting I went through a lot of works that are comparable to my theme; I generally used images from Google, but I also acquired some through social media. I used Canva, an online project creator, to create this post. I found this web site canva to be really useful and easy to use. I didn’t find anything difficult to create or manage, and I feel this is set up everything so conveniently. I utilized the canva temples in my article, as well as certain effects that make my essay more exciting to read.

RY Rough draft Reflection

If you had to compare your current self and your older self-just a few months apart, would you be able to tell any differences? What about if it was a skill you were already experienced on? Do you feel like you changed noticeably? If I had to think back about my writing in the past and compare it to the most recent writings I wrote I would say that not much has changed. However, when I put my two pieces of writing together, one from the start of the semester and one from this current month, I would be able to point out the differences. I believe that I have gotten better due to techniques like the quote sandwich and while attending this class I learned how to structure my writing better. If I had to compare and contrast my unit 1 and unit 3 work, I would say that there’s not much of a difference. However, if there was another unit, I think that it would be different due to the knowledge I have gained throughout this semester.I also think that the video comments Professor Carrie Hall made for us really helped us learn and get better because the comments were very helpful and informative, it pointed out our mistakes and how to make our writing better.

One of my favorite assignments is the unit 3 project assignment. I really enjoyed making this presentation compared to the rest of the assignments because making the presentation was entertaining and it introduced me to a website known as “Canva” which made making presentations easier and fun, if I had known of this website before, I would have definitely used it in the past. Making this project has also opened my mind towards different perspectives and different age groups. When I made the rough draft of the presentation, Professor Carrie Hall has pointed out that my presentation isn’t fourth grade friendly despite fourth grader’s being my audience. When she pointed that out, I looked back at my project and realized how much she was right. Thus making this assignment my favorite because I think I learned a lot as well as had fun. When I first started this project, I thought to myself that I should make an infographic, for it provides information needed as well as a bit of pictures to keep you enticed. However, I was wrong after reflecting back at it now. That’s why if I had to redo an assignment this would be the one I would redo. My design for this project was an infographic, fourth graders don’t really get appealed to this, so I would change up my content and design to be a comic book that follows a story with kid friendly language to help them understand the content.

My early beliefs and assumption’s about myself and my writing, is that I believed that I was a decent writer. I felt like I had a creative mind and my grammar was good. Not much has changed. While I still think I’m a decent writer, I realized that I didn’t have much technique. One of the noticeable things I can point out about my writing from early on this semester, is that when I quote something, I usually explain it a little bit and leave it at that. However, I learned that the quote sandwich technique, were I introduce the quote, quote it, and then explain it. I used to barely explain my quotes and rarely analyzed it, an example of this would be on my unit 2 project, “Video Games and Benefits”, I quoted, “They also found, “Children who played a lot of video games were also found to be 1.88 times more likely to have “high overall school competence” (Bolton 2016).  This quote states that video games improve your intellectual functioning as well as your school competence by more than 1.5x for both.” While this was just a month ago, I noticed that my explanation is extremely short and there’s not much analysis. While Professor Carrie Hall told us that the explanation and analysis should be longer than the quote its self, this did not happen during my unit 2 project. Which is why I would say that the quote sandwich technique is a really nice technique to know and I believe that it will transfer over after this semester ends.
