I plan to reveal perceptions and expectations the general public had of women’s reproductive health through the evolution of feminine hygiene product ads. I will include ads that first show the purity, innocent, dainty ideals that are forced into women through the trend of white clothing. Then ads that show the public encouraged women to hide their menstrual products with unbranded packaging. I will also include ads marketing dangerous chemicals to women as safe and necessary to eliminate odors that “ruin marriages”. This is an example of how women are shamed for natural body processes. On top this, I will include more recent but still ridiculous ads to show the issue is still a current issue because they tend to objectify women and focus on how menstruating affects sex and men. To keep the video lighthearted, I will add sound effects and a clip of an SNL bit. At the end of the day, I’m glad to be a woman in the 21st century where we know more about women’s anatomy, anyone can be a doctor, and we have the technology where women can and should be comfortable despite our reproductive health cycles.

may 5- Put audio to pictures of ads in video after learning how to. bring copy into class
may 10- implement the tips you were given in class to finalize project and submit.
I want to create a video reviewing past feminine hygiene products ads. My audience will be other CUNY students. I will focus on how these very vital everyday objects are marketed towards women and what it reveals about how society perceives women and their needs. I hope to reveal the misogynist biases that have been around for decades by pointing out the shaming and misinformation spread through these ads.
This 2011 valentines day tampax ad is an example of the ads I want to include. Although it is more recent, it is a great example of the problem with many ads. It is from a man’s perspective! Caption says “Mother nature please, The room is already paid.”…. *face palm*
To complete this project I will have to gather ads that rise some questions, anger, or laughs. I will have to record my voice and learn to add audio to pictures in a video. I may have to edit audio to make it more entertaining to listen to but I would keep the pictures as close to the original as possible. I would also include the origin of the ad- date of release and by what company. I will stick to ads released in the US but I will go as far back in time as I can find.
