Unit 3 Rough Draft Artist Statement

My process for my project has been coming together rather slowly. There has been some information I thought I wanted to use such as slides and videos, but sometimes what you envision doesn’t exactly unfold quiet the same. I am confident it will all come together. I’ve been compiling my information and making some flash cards to write down the most important information I want to use. Or better said key points.

The most important point I am trying to make is to convey why runners choose to continue to run long distances despite all of the obstacles they encounter. It is very easy to get lost trying to make this point without digressing from the main topic. I chose to make a you-tube video because I felt it was the best way to keep my audience interested even if they weren’t a runner. I wanted to make it interesting and keep the audience engaged.

I’ve learned that I have to become more tech savvy. I need to utilize my time more wisely without getting distracted by looking into more information that I don’t need to. It doesn’t have to take that long. If I start to add new information unnecessarily I will lose the audience.

I hope my audience learns that the hunger that the runners have goes beyond just running long distances. There is so much more to it, not just physically but mentally. Everyone has a story as to why they run. I want to be able to bring to life what they feel inside. It would be great my audience is left with excitement and desiring to give this sport a try. That they too would be craving a runner’s high. This in turn would turn into a permanent life style for physical and mind wellness. As some will say and attest to, “running is cheaper than therapy”.

Proposal Unit 3

My proposal for the project will be on my essay, Running Long Distances-Why Do We Run. My audience will be CUNY students and I will attempt to do this in You-Tube form. I’ll be reaching out to my niece Amanda Lee Domenech who is a Photographer, Videographer, and a media expert. She is a self made entrepreneur. I’ve attached an example of her You-Tube style that I would like to incorporate in my project. She utilizes, pictures, text, sound effects that I am striving for to reach my audience. I am no expert nor do I have experience in this area of multimodal media. This will be an enormous challenge for me.

I choose to hopefully narrate, use Instagram images, and maybe have some runners saying a few things from their own media post. I envision these other sources as intercepted flashes during some of the narration accompanied with sound effects. It should not be boring. It should be fun, engaging, exciting and visual. I may have assistance in the narration. I am not sure. I just know it’s key for the person to have great public speaking skills. Not a skill I attest to have, nor have I had to utilize this skill. But it’s something that I would love to learn and improve. I can only have positive gains acquiring this skillset as it does improve your confidence and challenges you to deliver information that you know and have researched. Communication skills are vital in everyday life. I foresee this project to be instrumental in future class projects that I may have to do throughout my studies.

UNIT 3 PROJECT BLOG

Do you think it’s important to have a multimodal component in writing classes? How do you feel about this upcoming assignment? (Excited? Confused? Annoyed?) Explain why you feel this way!

And, most importantly, what are your ideas for a Unit 3 project– due May 5. Who will your audience be? What genre will you write in? How do you think the multimodal component will help you reach your audience?

I feel it’s important to have a multimodal component in writing classes. It breaks up the monotony of the typical writing class. It allows the writer to deliver information in a new dynamic way. Not everyone wants to read to get the information. Some people process information differently and they will seek out the format that best suits their needs. Just in the way a student learns in a class setting, the information processed maybe best in a practical setting, auditory or visually. There are people who can’t read or maybe their native language is not English. This will afford everyone the opportunity to be in the “know”. Plus you may get more information in a shorter time due to how much content you can pack in.

I am a little apprehensive about the upcoming assignment. I hope I can deliver the information written using this multimodal component the way I in-vision it in my mind. There will be some challenges because I won’t know how to achieve the visual and audio impact I am striving for. This setback will be due to the lack of knowledge I have in this area of media, audio, programming and editing.

At the present I would like to do a You-Tube video. I enjoyed the delivery and style of the video essay on, The Benefits of Quitting. That is more or less what I envisioned prior to even seeing the video. My audience will be young to older adults. I am not sure yet if I would have someone aide me to deliver the information. I want it to be dynamic, humorous at times, witty, sensitive, and engaging. I want my audience to say, “yeah, I remember feeling like that once”, or ” I want to try that” or “been there done that”. It should be a reflection and or leave you feeling empowered. It makes me nervous because I hope I am not setting the bar so high and not meet the expectation of my idea. If I realize my idea, I feel I will be able to reach my audience via this You-Tube format because many already use this as a go to resource to get their information.
