In today generation kids are basically going to school just to be given unnecessary information that will not go no where in life. Parents should start taking action in trying to change this corrupted school system because teachers these days preferably the teachers in high school cause that’s where its really noticeable. Parents should go up to the school and talk to the principle about their child’s education because they are basically wasting there time coming to school and learning literally nothing that will help them in life. students should also stand up and say something about this problem before it gets even worse than it is right now. Students aren’t getting the proper education they deserve in today’s society. There are many ways that students can take the initiative to go out and get there education and there parents can do anything in their power to help and support their kids.

Since some teachers are lazy and would rather just give the students work without even caring if they did well or not. Also since teachers don’t like the fact they have to set up test, grade the test, create homework and also correct it, but the biggest problem of all is giving up there free time to help tutor students after school especially when they need it. Parents should go up to the school and talk to the principle about their child’s education because they are basically wasting there time coming to school and learning literally nothing that will help them in life. Parents should look for tutors that can helps there kids in the specific section of work they lack in instead of waiting for change. Parents can put there kids in after school programs where its a guarantee that their child they need. If there are parents that was well educated and have a degree can help their kids in the subjects there well educated in instead of relying on other people giving their kid false information.

“Im not racist”

The song “im not racist” was released on November 28 2017 which has 2.4 million views. The song was made to shows two men one black and one white in a warehouse and they are given the opportunity to air there racial grievances at one another and also their racial problems that they go through in there everyday life. Throughout the song “Im not racist” is repeated in order to show people that they are not racist but they just want to understand each other better and understand what one another is going through. In this generation people are often thought to be victimized even when they are not. In the song “Im Not Racist” by Joyner Lucas it shows two different people expressing their view points on how they are victimized in this society.

The white guy in the video is thought to be victimized so he starts to list examples on how he is. The white guy talks about how he’s not a racist but he is tired how black people are going about things in life for example according to the song he stated “Yellin’ “nigga this” and “nigga that” Call everybody “nigga” and get a nigga mad As soon as I say “nigga” then everyone react”. The white guy feel like he is being attacked and victimized by the black people just because he said the word nigga but in reality he is not he just feels attacked by others.  The white guy in the video feels like this is a major problem but nobody really sees it as a big deal they just think that he is complaining or feel attacked. The white gets frustrated and states “that And I work my ass off and I pay my taxes for what? So you can keep livin’ off free government assistance?” This shows how the white guy feels attacked so he start stating things that most black do. He is labeling all black people into one category. According to the song it states that “Food stamps for your children, but you’re still tryna sell ’em For some weed and some liquor or a fuckin’ babysitter While you party on the road ’cause you ain’t got no fuckin’ goals? You already late You motherfuckas needa get your damn priorities straight”. The white guy is getting angry because every time he say something he gets attacks and feels like he is the bad guy because everything he say is made into a big deal and then he feels victimized. 

On the other hand the black guy in the song talks about being victimized also but its taken more serious because in this generation and society people are making it a big deal because of the way how people victimize black people. The black guy states that “he power in the word “nigga” is a different sin We shouldn’t say it but we do, and that just what it is
But that don’t mean that you can say it just ’cause you got nigga friends Nigga, that word was originated for you to keep us under”. The black guy says how he is being victimize and its far worse than the white guy in the video is making his problem to be. The black guy explain how the n word the white people use to degrade us, black people use it to we know that’s just how we greet each other and also we use it because we know there’s a double meaning under. According to the song the black guy states that “And even if I wasn’t picking cotton physically That don’t mean I’m not affected by the history My grandmama was a slave, that shit gets to me And you ain’t got no motherfucking sympathy, you pussy nigga!”. No matter what happened in the past with people family relatives that dealt with slavery, segregation and racial abuse can affect there family members in the far future. He also states that “Can’t erase the scars with a bandage” in the song to explain you cant forget the pain so easily, especially if it keeps on happening in the world we live in.

Therefore in conclusion people that feel victimized should stop and think maybe the other person is going through something way worse than what they might be going through. In the song it states “I wish we could trade shoes or we could change lives So we could understand each other more but that’d take time But there’s two sides to every story and now you know mine, I’m hopin’ maybe we can come to an understandin’ Agree to disagree, we could have an understandin”. Its better to try an understand other people as best as we in order to know their pain instead of feeling victimized and attacking other people.

Revision Two is Due on Thursday, MAY 16. On Tuesday, we will be workshopping your rough drafts, so please bring in your work in progress. Whatever that entails will be pretty much up to you– a script or storyboard for a video essay? Or the lyrics for a song? Or, the rough draft of a more traditional essay? You must bring something in, though!

We will also be talking about the in-class exam– what it will entail, and what will be on it, as well as strategies for taking it.

PLEASE NOTE, THE FINAL EXAM IS ON TUESDAY THE 21ST DURING CLASSTIME (THE FIRST CLASS ONLY, NOT THE CONFERENCE HOUR.) YOU MUST TAKE THIS EXAM TO PASS THIS CLASS.

I WILL PASS OUT THE ESSAY YOU WILL BE WRITING ON FOR YOUR FINAL EXAM ON MAY 16TH. I WILL NOT HAVE THAT ESSAY UNTIL THE 16TH. PLEASE NOTE THAT I WILL NOT BE ON CAMPUS ON FRIDAY OR MONDAY IN BETWEEN CLASS AND THE EXAM AND I CAN’T LEAVE THE EXAM ANYWHERE FOR YOU. YOUR FINAL REVISION IS ALSO DUE ON MAY 16TH.

“College is super easy, I pass all of my exams, my GPA is sitting pretty at a 4.0, I don’t have to study after class, and my social life is flourishing!” said no successful college student ever. Being completely candid, more often than not, failing grades, long hours pouring over textbooks and class notes, along with turning down offers to turn up with friends are common college experiences. College life is not an easy task, students often must overcome problems both in and outside the classroom. The struggles that arise tend to negatively affect schoolwork. A common misconception is it is the teacher’s responsibility to take extreme efforts to combat the issues that arise. Students need accountability to persevere and seek help when necessary. Education is not a passive process; it takes time and considerable amounts of effort.

Ideally education should be a process that involves almost equal amounts of effort from both the student and the educator. Dr. Robert Leamnson wrote “Learning (Your First Job)”, which describes the components of the learning process (understanding and remembering) and several methods to aid this process both in and out of the classroom. Many of Leamnson’s learning strategies ring true. One example from the text Leamnson writes, “…we have to practice what we understand. Without rehearsal, that fantastic circuitry that enabled our understanding will gradually disintegrate and we can no longer reconstruct what we once understood” (Leamnson 3). This stresses that without repetition, the initial learning that was achieved will be forgotten. Without committing the information to memory through repetition, the student would later be unable to access the knowledge. The teacher can help the student with the initial understanding portion. But in order to truly learn and commit the information to memory, the student must then put in the effort to review and deepen their understanding of the material. Leamnson goes on to write, “
 bright students
 understanding what they hear or read. But
 get very poor grades and sometimes drop out. The reason is, they neglect the second part of learning, which is remembering” (Leamnson 2). In essence, despite being able to understand different material, students that do not commit the information to memory will not be able to perform well academically. Great comprehension ability can not help a person if they are unable to later draw forth and make use of the information.

It may seem as though some subjects or classes can be self taught, which leads some individuals to question the role of teachers. However, a vast majority of students require guidance and clarification by educators. John Taylor Gatto taught in the New York City school system for thirty years. He grew to believe the public school system hinders children as opposed to educating and preparing them to be responsible, productive adults. Gatto identifies his major gripes with the public school system in his article “Against School.” Some of the concepts Gatto mentions in the article I previously never gave much thought to and took for granted. A prime example being, Gatto mentions in the article, “1. To make good people. 2. To make good citizens. 3. To make each person his or her personal best. These goals are still trotted out today
 as a decent definition of public education’s mission” (Gatto 2). Based on this information, the public school system should aim to mold each young mind into morally good people that strive to achieve their best and are productive members of society upon graduation from high school. At the age of eighteen, approximately the same age many complete “the twelve-year wringer,” many aspects of the world transform and opportunities open up to individuals. For instance, eighteen marks the age when people are considered legally adults with the capacity to make their own decisions and be held accountable for said decisions and actions, enlist in the military, and can vote.

Personally, I never attended public school. However, through my experiences in Catholic schools I feel the parochial educational institutions I attended have strived to instill the objectives of the public education’s mission in their students. This was done through requiring volunteer work, stressing the importance of the Golden Rule (“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”), and rewarding good behavior and academic success while conversely reprimanding negative behavior and poor academic effort. The academic institutions I attended ensured we were aware of current events through a myriad of assignments.

In my school experience, I encountered several teachers that sought to keep the classroom interesting and students engaged by challenging students to fact check in order to possibly correct the teacher for various incentives, the chance of getting extra credit or a gift card was more than enough to capture the attention of the entire class. On several occasions, I found myself reeled back into lessons after zoning out giving more thought to impending lunch over the “golden nuggets of wisdom” tumbling out of my teacher’s mouth. I can recall the moment in my education that sparked my curiosity and effectively tethered me to science. An interest that made obtaining my Bachelor’s of Science in Biology truly a labor of love. Sophomore year of high school, my Chemistry teacher converted lab class into a veritable fireworks display conveying the whimsical applications of the Science.

 

Most of my learning experiences have been and continue to be positive, although not necessarily remarkable. However, as I sat in my high school’s Chemistry lab nearly fifteen years ago, I was not expecting the lesson of the hour to impact me so greatly. It was third period, I sat wondering what was in store for us in the darkened lab. As I looked around at the closed windows and shut off lights, I heard Mr. Mallia drone on about chemical reactions as he set up for the experiment. But being completely honest, I didn’t catch a word of what he was saying, I was far too distracted by the hushed whispers of my classmates, trying to catch up with the latest gossip, and the sounds of lacrosse drifting in from the field right outside the window. I was staring at my closed lab manual and notebook in front of me and fiddling with the pen between my fingers. Suddenly my attention was ripped away from the dark lab bench by a brilliant white flash in the center of the room. All heads, eyes, ears, and attention were focused on Mr. Mallia who stood behind a bunsen burner decked out in safety gear, tongs, and strips of Magnesium. Mr. Mallia capitalized on the moment of undivided attention to explain how fireworks function while highlighting the importance of Chemistry. He didn’t settle on telling us the different color reactions that result from burning various elements. He demonstrated with samples of Boron, Calcium, Copper, Iron, and Lithium creating flames that ranged from green, red, teal, and orange. Seeing real-world applications of lessons learned in class serves the dual purpose of helping students see the relevance of the information being learned and breaks up classroom monotony.

Although teachers can greatly impact how information is presented and explained to their students; ultimately, students are equally responsible for digesting and absorbing the material. Leamnson writes, “You cannot be ‘given’ learning, nor can you be forced to do it. The most brilliant and inspired teacher cannot ‘cause’ you to learn” (Leamnson 1). A good teacher can not force a student to learn it is the student’s responsibility as well. Conversation is not one sided neither is the learning process. Jacqueline West wrote about her experience returning to college as an adult and balancing responsibilities. She stresses the importance of time management in being successful. West writes, “…figure out how much study time you need. (A formula from DePaul University is to study two hours per credit hour in an easy class, three hours per credit hour for an average class, and four hours per credit hour in a difficult class.)” (West). This break down for time outside the classroom that should be dedicated to studying is commonly spread around academic campuses in one form or another. This emphasizes the importance of the student taking time to make an effort on their own to digest and absorb information from classes.

A person’s achievements are not based solely on their educational background but their motivation and perseverance are major components. That being said, some careers, such as medical doctor, require substantial schooling that would seem unattainable without the “twelve-year wringer” as a adequate base to build upon. School systems, teachers in particular can help spark curiosity in a given subject by escaping the humdrum routines. Whether it’s bringing the lesson to life in new and unexpected ways or offering incentives to ignite passion in the material, teacher are integral parts of the education process.

Sometimes extra explanation and one-on-one attention is necessary, tutoring assistance is available in the College Learning Center (Atrium G18). The Learning Center also allows students to use its computers and hosts various workshops. The workshops help students refine practical skills useful outside of school such as: writing resumes, cover letters, civil service information, and proper etiquette.

Other centers City Tech offers to assist students academic success are: the Center for Student Accessibility and Our Children’s Center. The Center for Student Accessibility provides services to aid students with disabilities and offers information regarding disability testing. Our Children’s Center provides child care for students (Cis).

If you are looking to take charge and be proactive in your college experience, signing up for CUNYfirst is a must. CUNYfirst aids in connecting students to blackboard (allowing students to check grades and get class notes), keeping tabs on progress obtaining your degree, declaring your major (when the time is right of course), financial aid, enrolling in classes, and getting unofficial transcripts.

Revision 2 proposal

After writing about the history and contraversal views on the word ‘faggot’ to the LGBT+ community in unit 2, I’d like to make a much more detailed video about the history of the word, how it devolved into a slur to others, how it’s been fought to be removed as a derogatory term to describe a gay person, and how it is implemented in today’s culture. There would be a quick overview the history and creation of the LGBT+ community, including instances of riots, movements, and violence against the community, in order to gain a better understanding of the harmful implication the word has within the community. The point of the video is to show viewers the growing negative implication of the word, as certain hate groups try to keep up with the growing population within the LGBT+ community, and ways to help out against these groups.
