Life of a Mutt

When you see me do see a girl

Or do you see her looks

You see a white girl

Thinking she has the privilege

That you have the right to stare

Looking closer thinking what is she

Is she this she that?

Little do they know

Feel like I’m being judged

My hair is crazy

I can’t tame it

It’s part of me

Being black

Doesn’t decide my heart

Being white

Doesn’t decide how I should be looked at

We don’t judge a book by a cover

So why do we judge

Everyone is unique

I’m mixed

Grow up thinking we are all equal

Being a mutt your never equal

To much of this

To little of that

Seen as dirty

Unwanted

Wrong

Life isn’t easy

Feels like you’re going down a rabbit hole

Will it ever end?

The staring

The comments

The names

They never stop

They hurt more and more

We need to put an end to it

Stop hurting each other

Love each

No matter what

                      The “Middle child” of society

It’s my first day back to college and I’m on the train to school.  I am leaning on the doors of the train as usually do. Looking at my phone as swipe throw peoples snapchats. As I swipe throw my friends post most of them are all talking about J. Cole’s new song. I am interested now wanting to know what the hype is about the new song. Suddenly, I am putting the name of the song into my search box on Apple music.  Through my headphones, I hear a males voice rapping to a nice beat. As I keep listening to the song I’m starting to like more and more. Thinking to myself J. Coles song Middle Child  is really good like I see why everyone is talking about it. As I listen to the song I thought to myself I’m happy I was being a little bit nosy because I have a new song to add to my playlist.

Cole is a rapper that always tries to talk about things that are happening now and things he deals with as a person. In the first verse of the song, cole is already talking about something big by saying “ I do not snort powder, I might take a sip I might hit the blunt, but I’m liable to trip I ain’t poppin’ no pill, but you do as you wish”. J. Cole talks about the use of drugs when being in the industry. On his 2018 album KOD, which stands for “Kids On Drugs,” Cole seems to take time to bring up the issue with people willing and supports using substance abuse in the hip-hop industry.

As we make our way throw the song Cole bring up another topic society today and the struggles “Too many ni**as in cycle of jail Spending they birthdays inside of a cell We coming from a long bloodline of trauma We raised by our mamas, Lord we gotta heal We hurting our sisters, the babies as well We killing our brothers, they poisoned the well Distorted self image, we set up to fail I’ma make sure that the real gon’ prevail, ni**a”. Cole is right there is a cycle young man going to jail coming out and going right back into a cell. Cole also touches on how these traumatic environments and events can cause long term problems for Black people making it hard. People killing each other over stupid things and women being physically and sexually abused. He also talks about the system were they always want to put people within their established stereotypes and styles. Therefore ending the real image of who we are.

J .Cole uses is music to speak about the topics people don’t really want to talk about. As other rappers talk about money, sex, drugs, and gangs. Cole talks about the uses of drugs because it needs to talked about. That the use of drugs is killing everyone and all different ages. Drugs haven’t just affected the music industry its has affected people everywhere. It has broken up families, losing family to the drugs and losing people at a young age.

Cole talks about the fact that how these traumatic environments and events can cause long term problems for Black people making it hard. People are killing each other over stupid things and women being physically and sexually abused. These are some other topics that people don’t want to talk about but they need to know. Your environment is something that affects you a lot. They shape you to the person that you will become because you don’t know anything different. Living in these traumatic environments growing up and seeing gangs, drugs, people killing each other is something you only know. People telling you-you’re not going to make it that you’re going to be like everyone you see. And this is something big on the black community that living in these types of environments you’re not going to be any different than the people you see every day. A woman being physically and sexually abuse is another thing that has affected many. Boyfriends and husbands beating on their woman as if they are a piece of property. This is something that no one should have to go throw. These are somethings people would say is mainly caused by the black community and no one wants to talk about it they just push it to the side and make the black community look bad. This is where J. Cole comes in as he knows his music reaches out to many. Therefore he could send out the message of what needs to to be said.

J.cole is an artist that wants a change to happen in the life we all live.  As there are many things wrongs with us we can change it. We could teach our kids what they should and shouldn’t do as the new generation, therefore, they don’t make the same mistake we already have done. To make a change for the better of the community and for you.

sonny’s blues

While reading “Sonny’s blues” by James Baldwin, something that was big that came up was the use of drugs. That is something that is big now and at anytime because it can affect anyone. When reading  Baldwin brings up that sonny is gone “ What’s going to happen to him now? I asked again. They’ll send him away someplace and they’ll try to cure him he shook his head. Maybe he’ll even think he’s kicked the habit, then they’ll let him loose… that’s all.” (21) He is saying it in a way that has a lot of truth to it.  They bring up a big problem that could happen to anyone. Burning up Sonny drug problem is a good thing many don’t want talking.

A Lab Rat in your classroom

Ever feel like a lab rat? When it comes to anything you do in life does your life feel like an experiment and you always have to test everything out. Or the things you do or been in are testing you. I know when I was in school grades k-12 I felt like a lab rat. When you were in school did you ever feel like a lab rat? When I was in middle school the principal and some other people would come into the classroom for the whole period and watch everything that happens. That made me feel like a lab rat. That my teacher was the scientist and I was the rat being used for the experiment. That was the idea schools are like science labs they study students and use students as experiments to see how the young minds will act by being drilled with information, habits, and attitudes. That they believe we will be used in society when we get older. Always feeling that you have to show off and make yourself and the teacher look good.

When I went to school it always felt like we had to put on a show. To make sure that you and your teacher looked good. I feel that schools do this on purpose for us to learn to work in a situation that would happen in the future while working. However when this happens kids feel like they’re doing something wrong. Seeing the person write on their clipboard and not say a word to you. But when they do talking to you they ask you questions like “do you understand the topic? Is the teacher helping you? Can you explain the topic to me?” And at that point, you wonder what should I really tell them. The true on whether I understand or not and is it going to get me or my teacher in trouble. Kids in this situation don’t know what to do. They feel under pressure to say the right answer. Is this suppose to be teaching or Preparing them to be scared when asked a question or on telling the truth.

Kids shouldn’t be lab rats. They’re there to learn not to be used as a experiment to see how well the teachers are, the types of teaching strategies they use or the main fact is did you learn something new and can prove it by taking a test. This is not teaching kids young minds information, habits and attitudes that they believe kids will be using in society when we get older. They’re teaching kids that everything in life is a test. Whether you like it or not you will always be tested. Making you out to look like those lab rats. Always having something new being tested on you whether you like it or not. That you have no say in what happens but that’s not true. Have a say in anything you do and that’s school. You have a say in how you want to learn, on how your teacher teaches you the topic on things that would help you understand it.

This is the truth when it comes to John Taylor Gatto’s article “Against School,” where he rates public schools intentions and there effectiveness of their education. As a teacher in the New York City school system were he grows to believe that the school system makes children oppose to education and preparing them to be responsible adults. Gatto mentions in the article, “ First, though  we must wake up to what our schools really are: laboratories of experimentation on young minds, drill centers for the habits and attitudes that corporate society demands.”(5) Based on this statement, the public school system is the place were kid go to be brainwashed by the educational system. Drilling habits and attitudes that we would need in society. Schools are like science labs they study students and use students as experiments to see how the young minds will act by being drilled with information, habits and attitudes they think that will be used in society.

School is the place to learn not to feel scared that you are wrong for something. Students aren’t lab rats they’re kids. Just wanting to have fun while at school. Not wanting to feel scared that they will be watched or be affected if they answer with the wrong question. This is the time for kids to speak up and say how they feel and what they want from their education system. That they don’t want to feel wrong when answering a question with their true opinion feeling that it will affect someone badly. School is a place to speak your mind and to talk with other people about it. Not a place to feel trapped, iceolated or being able to tell the truth.
