Ā Ā Ā The mutt

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Not to long ago me and my best friend went to the ice skating rink. And while there we met some boys that are around the same age as us. As we all try to skate we started talking and asking each other where weā€™re from what school we go to. When we get to the topic about nationality i always know someone is going to have a weird reaction and but my answer. When it comes to be my turn answering the question I kept thinking to myself like how are they going to react and how Iā€™m going to react to their reactions. When answering the question all the different words came to mind of what they could call me. As I stand there to hear the surprising comments from them i watch as everyone made a different face. And everyone’s face was of surprise, Ā asking me ā€œ Are you sure youā€™re black?, why are you so white?ā€ Growing up, it wasnā€™t uncommon for people to assume Iā€™m was white or hispanic. Or the case be that iā€™m actually mixed. Being mixed is a bad thing itā€™s just peopleā€™s reactions to when you tell them what you really are. But, in my family we are all mutts. Weā€™re all mixed a family of mutts.

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Coming form a family where everyone is mixed isnā€™t something surprising to me. There was always something new and different to try from each and every part of the family that is different. Growing up in a neighborhood were people were mostly black, hispanic and asian you always get you’re just white or hispanic. Telling people i’m not hispanic was always a surprise to them, ā€œ like really youā€™re not hispanic? Like not at all not even part?ā€ my answer is always no. I have to explain that iā€™m mixed that iā€™m half polish and half african american. Peopleā€™s second reaction is always ā€œ youā€™re WHAT? Youā€™re black, you donā€™t look black? Wow you really are a damn mutt.ā€ Hearing the word mutt always has a different effect on me based on the person that says it and how they say it. Ā In my family we call each other mutts thatā€™s because we know it doesnā€™t hurt when saying to each other and we arenā€™t saying it as a bad thing. But when some people say it, the word always comes off different. You feel like theyā€™re talking bad about you like wow you arenā€™t pure. Like have you ever felt different from others or bad because you wasnā€™t the same as your friends. One thing that is big is what side do you take. Like for me it’s like iā€™m i going to choose my polish side more then my african american side when it comes to things or iā€™m i going to be a ā€œmuttā€ and be my own self.

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā The word mutt is used in many ways. Being derogatory word used to call a racehorse slow in poor condition, to call a dog that is mixed bread, a person who is awkward and ignorant, an unattractive woman. But the word is also used in a derogatory word against people of mixed race. The world’s history lies as another insult. It comes from the word “muttonhead,” another American word that also means”fool.” “Muttonhead” had been around since the early 19th century. At the same time was anti- miscegenation. The time when law criminalized both marriage and sexual relationships between people of white decent and black decent. These two things are hard on the mixed community. Being called a mutt is like being call dirty. And not being able to marry who you truly love because youā€™re different and that if you have children with this person your kids are dirty because they are mutts.

Ā Ā Mutt is a word thatā€™s is used that much by people my age. But you still hear it being used around. Have you ever been called a mutt? I have I also been called Oreo, polablack because Iā€™m half polish and half black, mixed baby and some other things. All these names have the same thing in common someone being multiracial. However some of these names make us feel unwanted, uncomfortable and just confused about who we are and want to be. You think like by being multiracial will I get this job are they going to like me for me or are they going to judge by what they see or what on paper. Being multiracial isnā€™t a bad thing but people do make us feel bad about who we are. We just want to fit in like early one else and not have to pick one side over the other. We just want to be judge by who we are as a person not by the looks and nationality.

Learned

Mutt is a word everyone has heard or has said to someone. Ā Mutt meaning so one that is multi-racial or a person that is stupid. The mutt comes from the words mongral and muttonhead in the 19th century. But today itā€™s used to say someone is mixed. But when the word is used it makes people feel uncomfortable when talking. When used towards a person we feel like as if we are a animals.

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao

The excerpt from ā€œThe Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Waoā€ by Junot DiazĀ Ā made me a little bored at first. Then whenĀ  surprisingly later it becameĀ  interestingĀ  that I found myself wanting to read more about the “fuku.” I guess it was because of how Diaz was telling the history of “fuku.” That he wrote in a style that seemed lessĀ  formal but isĀ  likeĀ  more natural and humorous. The sentence that took me by surprise and made me laugh was ā€œwho killed JFK? Let me, your humble Watcher, reveal one and for all the Godā€™s Honest Truth: It wasnā€™t the mob or the ghost of Marilyn fucking Monroe.ā€(4) If it was me i wouldn’t write as much curse words in my writing. Be after reading Diaz’s work i would like to write like him and how he writes to catch the audiences eyes.Ā  I believe in superstitions, even when my grandparents told me about the superstitions in Poland I would always listen closely to what they were saying. But the way Diaz described ā€˜fukuā€™ by asking who killed JFK and were the curse of the Kennedy’s came from andĀ  talking about his familyā€™s personal ā€˜fukuā€™ experience. This help me believe that other people believed in the same thing. I like how he didnā€™t really put much thought into using academic words but as if he was talking to a friend about it.

Soapstone

Speakerā€“ The speaker is an African American male named Ta-Nehisi Coates. He is married and has 6 brothers and sisters

Occasionā€“Coates talked Ā about the use of the N-word, and how saying this word has a lot power. Ā No matter who uses or how they use it thereā€™s so much meaning behind it.

Audience: I thinkĀ he is directing this towards everyone but mainly African Americans. Because he uses the word ā€œweā€ when speaking about African Americans.

Purpose:Ā The purpose of this article is to show how great words are. And how we use them not knowing the meaning behind it. Like how he uses examples of those women who called each other bitches but if someone else was to do it there would be a whole issue.

Tone:Ā Coates tone is somewhat serious and intense about the subject. He identifies the negative impact of the word.

Thoughts:Ā  I liked the reading because it made me think the words I use in my daily life. Like do I really know the meaning behind them. He did a really good job in making his points visible and valid.

is your education being advertised?

Ā Is your Ā Education being Advertised ?

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā The society we live in now today is a place were having the newests and latest products is a big thing. Always feeling like you need those thing in order to fit in. Whether itā€™s the newest clothes, footwear, technology ,etc. We see the advertisement for these thing and think to ourselves that we really do need them. Constantly being pressured with the message that you need the newest things to fit in. Even when having something thatā€™s already new to you thereā€™s always something newer being added to the shelves making us want it. And the same thing happens when it comes to educational things. Is this type of consumerism drilled into our head and culture that it affects you? Is this consumerism Ā apart of your education making society gullible and mindless?

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā The two groups that can answer these questions are teachers and students. This is the truth when it comes to John Taylor Gattoā€™s article ā€œAgainst School,ā€ where he rates public schools intentions and there effectiveness of their education. In his article Gatto states, ā€œ School didnā€™t have to train kids in any direct sense to think they should consume nonstop, because it did something even better: it encouraged them not to think at all.ā€(4) It’s not like that schools promote consumerism but however they donā€™t disencourage it. Leaving students defenseless from advertisement. Not teaching students to stop and think but teach them to consume nonstop. To sit there and think what could happen or what should happen instead of just trusting it. Making them consumers as the believe in what they are being told without the information to back it up.

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā As a teacher in the New York City school system were he grows to believe that the school system makes children oppose to education and preparing them to be responsible adults. Gatto mentions in the article, ā€œ First, though , we must wake up to what our schools really are: laboratories of experimentation on young minds, drill centers for the habits and attitudes that corporate society demands.ā€(5) Based on this statement, the public school system is the place were kid go to be brainwashed by the educational system. Drilling habits and attitudes that we would need in society. Schools are like science labs they study students and use students as experiments to see how the young minds will act by being drilled with information, habits and attitudes they think that will be used in society.

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā When you turn Eighteen thatā€™s the time when it Ā marks a point in your life when you are considered legally adults. By being legal they are able to make their own decisions and be held accountable for what they say and their actions. As a person who attended public school the idea of the education system drilling habits and attitudes that we would need in society is true. With these habits and attitudes being drilled into your head affects the decision making process because you think about how itā€™s going to affect your society and you. You think about all the things that you have learned and how you are going to us it in your life in society. Making you wonder if that what you been tough is going to help or hurt you. Being gullible is believing something without questioning the person or the information. If the goal for schoolā€™s is to feed information to students without giving further information. Making students foster the idea of gullible behavior. My experience at school were teachers would tell you something but you always think are they telling me the truth. Am i going to really needs this? Is this going to affect me later?Teachers always telling you donā€™t bring this donā€™t do that. That these things will help us when done with school. But the truth is all these thing somehow are apart of everyday life and part of society and how we live.

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā In another article by Dr. Robert Leamnson ā€œLearning (Your First Job)ā€ were he describes the components of the learning process and the several methods on how to process. Theses several methods in and out of the classroom. Leamnson writes, ā€œYou cannot be ā€˜givenā€™ learning, nor can you be forced to do it. The most brilliant and inspired teacher cannot ā€˜causeā€™ you to learn. ā€ (Leamnson 1) No teacher can force you to learn. Even best teachers canā€™t force you to learn. Ā Itā€™s you as a person that has to force themselves to learn. This is if you really care about your education. No teacher should force you to learn even your favorite teach canā€™t force you to learn. You have to force yourself to want to learn and succeed.

The society we live in now today is a place were having the newest and latest products is a big thing. And the same thing happens when it comes to educational things. Is this type of consumerism drilled into our head and culture that it affects you? Is this consumerism apart of your education making society gullible and mindless?

There are two groups that can answer these questions and that’s teachers and students. This is truth when it comes to John Taylor Gattoā€™s article ā€œAgainst School,ā€ where he rates public schools intentions and there effectiveness of their education. In his article Gatto states, ā€œ School didnā€™t have to train kids in any direct sense to think they should consume nonstop, because it did something even better: it encouraged them not to think at all.ā€(4) It’s not like that schools promote consumerism but however they donā€™t disencourage it. Eighteen marks the age when people are considered legally adults. By being legal they are able to make their own decisions and be held accountable for what they say and their actions. Gatoo (reread)

My plans to reread the article is to read for 10 minutes then take a break from reading then go bake to reading. The break will give me time to get a snack and to check my phone. when also reading will try not to touch my phone so i will put it on the other side of the room. also when reading i will take more notes

When reading the article for a second time, i may sure to pay attention to details of the article. To admit for the first time i just read the article just to read it not actually reading for details or information. while reading for the second time i learned the educational system originated form Prussian origin. When states , ” Our educational system really is Prussian in origin, and that really is cause for concern. The odd fact of a Prussian provenance for our schools pops up again and again once you know to look for it.” (3) He also states , ” But what shocks is that we should so eagerly have adopted one of the very worst aspects of Prussian culture: an educational system deliberately designed to produce mediocre intellects, to hamstring the inner life,…”(3) When reading the article the first time i skipped over the paragraph when he talks about the history although that was a lot for me to read with out falling asleep. But when reading he makes some good points. Also learned that some big people had a part in the educational system like Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and some other people. i didn’t know that they a had a part in the educational system. So safe to say it was a good thing to read for a second time. Maybe the first time you don’t get all the information but giving it a second chance will help you see what you missed.

Gatto

Reading “Against School’ by John Taylor Gatto was confusing at one point and became boring. I was losing my interest in the reading as I moved further along. At first i like how he would talk about kids being bored in class. And i agreed with that because when i was in high school classes were boring to me. When asking kids why class was boring Gatto answers were, “They said they wanted to do something real, not just sitting around. They said teachers didn’t seem to know much about their subjects and clearly weren’t interested in learning more”(1). This is something i agree with i always wanted to do something real in class. Something connected to my life something that iĀ  would use later on. But my teachers seemed not to know how and didn’t even feel interested in the subject that they were teaching.

Something that i was confused about was the history apart that came about in the reading that’s were Gatto lost me and things became boring and losing the interest to read anymore. Gatto starts talking about the history of schooling in the United States and the purpose of school. Gatto states, “We have been taught (that is, schooled) in this country to think of “success” as synonymous with, or at least dependent upon, ” schooling”, but historically that isn’t true in either an intellectual or a financial sense”. (2) After that is went on to talk about H.L Mencken more and everything when down hill there for me. I try to push throw the reading but because my interest was lost i started to do other things.
