1a) Define “metaphor” or “simile” (they are slightly different)

A simile is a literary device where a subject is compared to something else (usually unrelated) to give the subject an emphatic depiction.

A metaphor is a figure of speech that describes something by saying it’s something else.

    b) Provide an example:

“It was as fast as the speed of light”

    “I’m/You’re a mess.

    2a) Define “alliteration”

Alliteration is the usage of same letters and/or sounds between adjacent words.

    b) Provide an example:

    The clever cat.

    3a) Define “personification”

To give a nonhuman subject human characteristics.

    Provide an example:

The tree had a carefree sway to it.

4a) What is a “short story”? Define it.

A piece with the contents of a normal story, but shortened.

    b) Name an example: (Use “quote marks” for such titles).

5a) What is a “novel”? Define it. (Use underlining for novel titles.)

    A long narrative?

    b) Name an example:

    “Animal Farm”

6a) What is a “play”? Define it. (Use underlining for such titles.)

A play is a written script intended to be acted out live.

    b) Name an example:

    “The Piano Lesson”

    CINEMATIC TERMS

    7) What is film editing?

The making of changes to pre-existing videograph(s).

    8a) Define symbol (or symbolism)

In most, if not all cases, a symbol is a noun used as a representation of another noun.

    b) Provide an example:

The “raised fist” over the years has become a symbol of black nationalism.

9a) What is one of your favorite works of literature?

None at the moment. I’m currently going down the philosophy route and gradually getting back into literature.

    b) Why do you like it? (full sentence, please)

    N/A

10a) What is one of your favorite films?

I currently don’t have any favorite films as well. Though, growing up I did enjoy the Hunger Games franchise a lot.

    b) Why do you like it? (full sentence please)

I liked it for the action and anticipation.

11a) Who is one of your favorite writers?

    N/A

    b) Why do you like him or her?

    N/A

12a) Who is one of your favorite film directors?

    N/A

    b) Why do you like this director? (full sentence)

    N/A

    13) After you have read a story and later seen its film version, are you pleased or disappointed?

From the times I have done this, I was normally disappointed. The books were usually more detailed with their scenes than the movies. Likely due to the time constraints and budget of movies. Certain details in movies not being synchronous with the books were not a big, but still another disappointment for me. For example, the main character’s pet being a turtle in the book version, but a cat in the movie version.

Please name at least one title and explain why…14) Why do you think film versions change details from their source stories?

I can’t remember any specific titles at the moment. But, I think one of the reasons they do this is for efficiency. They are probably considering manageability, along with the budget and time constraints.

    Literary terminology:

1a) Define “metaphor” or “simile” (they are slightly different)

A metaphor is a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable.

    b) Provide an example:

    He is a couch potato.

    2a) Define “alliteration”
Alliteration is the repetition of the same sound at the start of a series of words in succession whose purpose is to provide an audible pulse that gives a piece of writing a lulling, lyrical, and/or emotive effect

    b) Provide an example:

“Goodness Gracious” is an example of alliteration.

    3a) Define “personification”

Personification is giving human-like attributes nonhuman objects.
    Provide an example:

The wall was staring at me.

4a) What is a “short story”? Define it.
A short story is A story with a fully developed theme but significantly shorter and less elaborate than a novel.

    b) Name an example: (Use “quote marks” for such titles).

Sonny’s Blues by James Baldwin is an example of a short story.

5a) What is a “novel”? Define it. (Use underlining for novel titles.)
A novel is a fictitious prose narrative of book length, typically representing character and action with some degree of realism.

    b) Name an example: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a famous novel.

6a) What is a “play”? Define it. (Use underlining for such titles.)
A play is a form of drama that primarily consists of dialogue between characters and is intended for theatrical performance rather than mere reading.

    b) Name an example: Madea by Tyler Perry, although now is a movie, started out as A play.

    CINEMATIC TERMS

    7) What is film editing?

Film editing is both a creative and a technical part of the post-production process of filmmaking.

    8a) Define symbol (or symbolism)
Symbolism is the idea that things represent other things.

    b) Provide an example: The Christian Cross is a use of symbolism.

9a) What is one of your favorite works of literature? “The Prophet” by Khalil Gibran is one of my most favorite pieces of literature.

    b) Why do you like it? (full sentence, please)
There is a lot of wisdom in that book that ended up helping me out later in my adult life.

10a) What is one of your favorite films? One of my favorite films is the pursuit of happiness.

    b) Why do you like it? (full sentence please)
“The Pursuit of Happiness”, is the only movie to ever make me cry. It showed me a side of life I had never seen or really understood, It tells the story of a man struggling to provide for his son.

11a) Who is one of your favorite writers? R.L. Stine.
    b) Why do you like him or her? R.L. Stine is the creator of goosebumps and this was my favorite series of all time to read as a child. To this day I am still a lover of all things horror.

12a) Who is one of your favorite film directors? Rob Zombie.

    b) Why do you like this director? (full sentence)
Rob Zombie created of my favorite horror films of all time, ” House of a Thousand Corpses”, and I have yet to see anything like it. His taste for gore and horror is unique and captures the audience’s attention.

    13) After you have read a story and later seen its film version, are you pleased or disappointed? It depends on the story but usually, I am more entertained by the film, however, more emotionally invested in the novel itself.

Please name at least one title and explain why…
“Bridge To Teribithia”, is one example I can think of. See, alot of the films have to skip important parts of the book and this means there is a lack of context for alot of the movie. However, this is where creativity plays a big part in the movie production itself.

    14) Why do you think film versions change details from their source stories?
There is not enough time in a film to accurately represent the novel. There are also external factors such as producers, target audiences, and budgets that play a big part in this.
