12/08 What's in a name?
Description: A fun fact about HAL... (please see the pdf)

His name was created because in the 1960s (and before) International Business Machines was THE most noteworthy computer company.

Many people find HAL the most interesting character in 2001: A Space Odyssey. His passive-aggressive personality and omnipresence make him a fascinating villain, perhaps in marked contrast to the rather bland Dave and Frank characters.

The actor Martin Balsam, who was Det. Arbogast in Psycho, had auditioned for the voice role of HAL, but he was deemed too emotional. Instead, a little-known Canadian actor, Douglas Rain, voiced him.
