11/16 second set of readings theme: men and women
Content
Second Class Readings Theme: Men and Women Press Ctrl + click or cut and paste into your browser to open hyperlinks for 1 through 6 These are six readings, most are short stories that either discuss husbands and wives or deal in some way with men and women. I will post separate comments for each for you to respond to. In several days, I will give you your next essay assignment which will ask you to mention whether or not the writer is showing bias for or against his or her own gender in all six of the readings and a film that I will send you. Note: most of the commercials you were asked to see were decidedly biased against men. These readings are varied and different (maybe). 1) An essay by Judy Syfers called “Why I Want a Wife” http://www.columbia.edu/~sss31/rainbow/wife.html 2) A very short story called “The Story of an Hour”: http://www.vcu.edu/engweb/webtexts/hour/ 3) A short story by Bobbie Ann Mason called “Shiloh”: http://english204-dcc.blogspot.com/2011/05/shiloh.html 4) A short story by William Faulkner called “A Rose for Emily”: http://xroads.virginia.edu/~drbr/wf_rose.html 5) A short story by Flannery O’Connor called “A Good Man Is Hard to Find”: http://xroads.virginia.edu/~drbr/goodman.html 6) A short story by Ernest Hemingway, called “The Short, Happy Life of Francis Macomber” https://faculty.washington.edu/jdb/303/Hemingway/The%20Short%20Happy%20Life%20of%20Francis%20Macomber.pdf (here is an audiobook version, read to you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cW7X5B-tCc) Remember: I will be posting questions for discussion on each of these, as if we were having a class discussion. The reading is like having homework.
