ENG 1101 Fall 2021 0277

Remember, an internal quote is what you would include inside the paragraphs of an essay.

I am posting two correct models for what I was expecting.  Please write what it asks you to write.

Quoting is an essential component of research writing.

I am simultaneously posting a pdf of the same document in Files with color highlighting.

Method A   tag before quote three parts: tag, quote, reference.

Two suggested answers:

One author says, “The very basic limitation of books, the inability to show you everything in the story in all its detail, is also its principal strength” (Sherber).

One writer explains, “The very basic limitation of books, the inability to show you everything in the story in all its detail, is also its principal strength” (Sherber).

Above are two examples of what you were supposed to come up with using just the yellow-highlighted sentence in the article that was uploaded on Moodle

Since the tag has to have a subject and verb and since you cannot use the author’s proper name, you must use a common noun like author, writer, reviewer, observer.

You are recommended to use present tense verbs to add a more dynamic style.

The author’s last name is used in the reference because his name has to go somewhere and something has to go in parentheses.   Since there was no page number,  the author’s name had to be there.

To do:

  • PLEASE COPY ONE OF BOTH OF THE ABOVE ANSWERS.
  • THEN REDO IT WITH THE TAG AFTER THE QUOTE. THE REFERENCE WILL STILL COME LAST:

Method B  quote before tag:

  1. tag follows quote:

“ Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxx xx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx” xxxxxxx,” *says _______ (    ).

Page number–or last name–goes in parenthesis before the period.

*Use any present tense verb that makes sense.  Add a common noun after the verb—who wrote it, who explained it. Then the actual last name goes in parentheses.   Then you put in the period.  The quote is separated from the tag with a comma.
