Course Description

This hands-on course will focus on the rich potential connections between comics that delve into a specific time and place, and the research underpinning those narratives. We will explore a variety of research based drawing and art-making techniques and consider the relationship between research and representationalism. Emphasis will be placed on individual stylistic exploration. We will explore key elements of elements of story: character and setting, through the lens of visual research and purposeful design. Course outcomes will include a project proposal including primary characters, settings, and additional items key to understanding visual narrative such as such infographics or maps. We will explore both the uses of primary source materials (observation, photographs, newspapers, collage elements) in nonfiction and fiction graphic novels, as well as partake in our own research to supplement either a graphic work in progress, or a proposal that will accompany our final thesis project.
