Written Project Reflection: The song I chose for this project was “Mashallah” by Maher Zain. When listening to Maher Zain’s piece, I could hear the classic Arabic instruments I am very familiar with. I felt a sense of lightness as the sounds weren’t too heavy or harsh. The instruments carry each other and transition in unique ways. Once you get used to a melody another one is suddenly played in. In the beginning, the distinct whistle or flute sound inspired the flowing lines I drew. As well as the main melody is also what inspired the swoops and dips within the patterns, I felt as if the song was swiftly but smoothly declining down and repeating back at the top again. The drumming is what influenced the circles, which seemed to start heavy but gradually played into the rest of the beat. It seemed like the artist wanted an upbeat and intricate song. What I learned from this project was that creativity can come in all forms, something as simple as the beat of a drum or a repeated melody, can be turned into an art piece. A thing that I could have done better was to be more precise in some of my designs, like taking more time to draw out what I felt or being more careful with my work. In the next project, I’m hoping to use my potential that was discovered in this project and to go further within my imagination.
