Pattern Mashup

Discovery Phase

I’ve been pretty obsessed with the “When I Get Home” album by Solange Knowles since it premiered in 2019. During the listening and drawing phase, I let the pencil ride the wave of the beat and mantra of the song “Binz,”; I started to produce almost frequency-like waves in my sketches. I began to experiment with other shapes; however, waves and line work were what felt authentic in the moment.

From the 12 squares, I chose 6 that resonated with me the most and transferred the designs to the Bristol pad to be prepped for redrawing.

Define Phase

The patterns share the same root, yet they all stand independently. Each pattern has its sense of waves and line work, resembling frequencies. The negative space guides the visualization to create shape.

Develop Phase

I drew the borders for the six final squares, a bit to the right but still proportional, and I started to pencil in the final six patterns. After the meticulous round of sketching came the permanent outline with the inking pens, followed by the final fill.

Reflection

I thoroughly enjoyed creating patterns and showcasing my connection to this album and the song. I can improve by learning to be more efficient with the ruler and ensuring the line work is crisp. I should also be more careful when wiping the page to avoid spreading ink where I don’t want it. In the next project, I will be more mindful of my errors and apply better practices. I will also take the inking skills with me; I found it therapeutic.
