February 19th/Topic of the Week

In class today on February 19th, we will begin class by trying to construct a timeline of key events in the 19th century in Graphic Communications. Then, we will begin our discussion of Typography. We start by looking at some Conundrums in Type, done by Pentagram. See link at http://new.pentagram.com/2009/01/new-work-saks-fifth-avenue-chr/. We will have some fun trying to identify these visual puns and analyzing how the terms you learned from the Adobe Type Primer are applied in these designs.

We will then review a short series of slides I’ve prepared to help you identify differences in letter forms and we will be discussing the use of typography in some of the logo history report you did for class last week and in some recent Olympic Commercials such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tf8Eqi8JBhw and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiyIcz7wUH0
