Our second visit to the B.H.S building was really interesting. We learned about the Brooklyn Theater Fire, December 5 1876. 1000 people were in attendance, and 300 died. Our class split into 3 groups. My group and I looked at maps of Brooklyn. We used a atlas to find what maps to look at. Our group decided to look at the year before the fire, and the year after. Isiah and i had to look for a way to find the address of the Brooklyn Theater, so we asked a lady who worked there. She directed us to a book called “Curtin’s Brooklyn Business Directory”. We looked at names of businesses in alphabetical order and found the address. We learned that there were only two exits, and the streets at the time were railroad streets, so at the time there were serious complications to put the fire out. Question i have are, How did they fight the fire?, and what were the surrounding buildings?
